Saifee Hospital cures more than 1200 COVID patients with one of the lowest mortality rate in India with a collective effort of the entire unit serving at Saifee’s COVID 19 facility.
Saifee’s success story on COVID 19 patient handling:
Being the city’s first private hospital to have a 50 bedded COVID-19 Ready facility(currently 100 beds provision), Saifee Hospital has admitted 1426 patients from April 4, 2020, and has treated & discharged 1213 patients to date. Out of which 18% of patients admitted were critical on admission and hospitalization, and almost 78% of these patients had co-morbid conditions such as DM, HT etc. With constant updates to patient’s family members regularly, inclusive, of video calls, Saifee Hospital has a unique discharge protocol of on-going follow-up after discharge and easy to follow e-booklet on Home Care for COVID 19 patients.
It is the result of well-coordinated efforts, of the entire hospital staff including the doctors, nurses, care givers, health Technicians, etc., supported by a highly efficient inter-department machinery working round the clock to ensure timely supply of goods and other necessities required for the patients as well as the staff e.g. Engineering department, BME department, Pharmacy, and F&B department. One of the major contributors to Saifee’s success story on COVID 19 patient handling is the training and skill development of the staff and crew set to work on COVID cases, with little time in hand to turnaround the things and equip every member from doctor to nurses to technicians, etc. was a task at hand.
Preparing the facility with international guidelines and protocols certainly demanded effective workforce management e.g. 24X7 nurses & caregivers roaster, doctors on call, teleconsultations, housekeeping, etc. A special COVID Empathy group was set up to help patients and the crew handling them, who constantly provided counseling to elevate their mental conditioning and help them think positively, which in turn had a great impact on their overall recovery. Saifee management paid great attention to the sterilization and infection control at the premises and the equipment being used at the COVID facility and followed the necessary global protocols underlined by the authorities.
Constant internal audits were conducted to ensure staff wearing the safety gear including – PPE kits, glows, masks, face shields, etc. The Supply chain management at Saifee Hospital played a vital role in ensuring timely and prompt supplies, be it medical types of equipment, sterilization, and fumigation, 24×7 pharmacies with adequate stock of necessary drugs and medicines, well-defined infection protocols. Saifee management also ensured good health of the staff and crew working in the COVID facility, by providing them with immunity boosters, giving regular time-outs to avoid the burn-out, healthy & nutritious meals for better stamina, regular counseling sessions, etc.
Commenting on the same, Dr. Moiz Bhaisaheb, Executive Trustee at Saifee Hospital said, “Saifee has always been on the forefront to ensure its full support in such situations, and we were one of the first few hospitals to build COVID facility in Mumbai. Our international standards of services and expertise in the field helped us to create a world-class COVID care unit, with the best of the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. Saifee’s efficient design thinking helped to handle COVID 19 patients with the least exposure to the other areas of the hospital, in a way curtailing the infection and safeguard the areas of the premises for Non-COVID patients. I salute and thank all the COVID warriors at Saifee for relentlessly working towards nations fight against the pandemic”.
