The onset of winter calls for extra care to be taken by pregnant. The following are some practical tips to help pregnant sail through these winter months safely and snugly

Drink plenty of water: Winter subconsciously makes us drink less water. However, as winters are times of extended dryness, the body needs extra water during winters. It is a good idea to set reminders in mobiles to help you keep drinking enough water throughout the day. Dehydration can be dangerous for both the mother and the baby. It can lead to various infections and can also affect the production of breast milk.

Get a flu shot: Winter is the season of cold and flu and it is advisable for pregnant to take a flu shot. Winters weaken immune system, leaving pregnant and baby at increased risks of communicable diseases.

Dress snugly: It is imperative for pregnant ladies to dress snugly and keep themselves warm and comfortable during winters. You can experiment with a number of wearables to make yourself look and feel good – wear a tank top or a t-shirt, along with a cardigan, a buttoned shirt, and your favourite warm, snuggly sweater.

Get cured for cold: If pregnant suffers from cold and flu for more than three days, it is advisable to see a doctor and receive treatment for the ailment.

Wash hands regularly: Washing hands regularly is the best way to avoid disease causing germs from entering body. It is advisable to wash hands each time you run an errand. In case you find it too tiring to make so many frequent trips to the sink, make sure to keep a hand sanitizer handy throughout the day.

Stay indoors as much as possible: During pregnancy body is more vulnerable to diseases. This can be dangerous if body is regularly exposed to extreme weather conditions and high exposure to germs outdoors. During pregnancy, the body also takes a lot of time getting accustomed to weather changes. Thus, it is advisable to stay in the comfort and warmth of home and postpone all outings until the weather improves.

Regular Exercise: It becomes difficult to go for a walk when the weather is chill, especially so for pregnant women. Some indoor exercises are good substitutes to be healthy, fit and safe during pregnancy. Take up any physical activity including going to a gym, doing yoga at home or going for a stroll at a local mall.

Practice breathing exercises: The following are 3 breathing exercises that pregnant will benefit from:

Breathing from the chest: Stand upright and keep your feet parallel. Close your mouth and take a deep breath while counting to 10. Place your hand on your chest while you do this – feel your hand move outwards as your lungs expand and contract.

Breathing from the stomach: Fold your legs while sitting in a comfortable position. Start breathing from your lower abdomen and fill your belly with air. Breathe out at the same pace that you breathe in.

Alternate shallow and deep breathing: Sit in a comfortable position and relax your body. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, taking even breaths. Open your mouth wide and inhale through your mouth while counting to five. Repeat at least 20 times.

Make liberal use of moisturizer: During winters, the skin becomes rough and dry, leaving the skin dull and lifeless. Pregnancy adds to the dryness of the skin, making it itchy, flaky and uncomfortable. In order to rejuvenate skin and bring it back to life, avoid taking hot showers – bathe using lukewarm water instead. Immediately moisturize skin with a deep, rich moisturizer, post a shower to make it soft, supple and hydrated. Make sure to apply a generous quantity of moisturizer on hands, belly, knees and elbows. Body will be grateful for all the care that is shown during pregnancy.
