Hemiplegia is one of the most frequent clinical presentations of stroke that damages the corticospinal tracts in one hemisphere of the brain. The prevalence rate of stroke varies from 44.54 to 150 per lakh population. ‘Stroke’ referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the loss of brain function due to a disturbance in its blood supply. This could either be due to ischemia or haemorrhage.
The most common cause of hemiplegia is stroke. It also occurs due to head injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumours, brain infections, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and toxic inhalation. Hemiplegia is often used interchangeably with hemiparesis. An individual living with hemiparesis experiences a weak paralysis on one side of the body, while hemiplegia may cause the person to experience full paralysis on one side of the body, as well as difficulty in breathing or speaking. Symptoms of hemiplegia range from one person to another and are dependent on severity of the condition. Symptoms include Impaired motor skills, difficulty in grasping or holding on to objects, weakness of muscles or stiffness on one side of the body, permanently contracted muscles or muscle spasticity, poor balance, & difficulty in walking.

Paralysis is a severe neurological ailment that disturbs the physical and mental ability of the patient.
