Injuries and violence have been neglected from the global health agenda for many years, despite being predictable and largely preventable. This accounts for 9% of the world’s deaths, nearly 1.7 times the number of fatalities that result from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.
Recently one day I was thinking, whether we can dream of a world without injuries and violence?! As per the report from Nimhans Bangalore, injuries were the leading cause of death in the age group of 15-24 years (13309; 35%), Second Leading Cause of death in 5-14 years (3003; 16.2%) and 25-34 years (15330; 30%), Third in 35-44 years (10352; 19%) and Fourth in 45-54 years (6238; 11%).
Injuries and violence
In injuries and violence there are two types – Unintentional and Intentional. They are Traffic injuries, Suicides, Burns, Homicides, Falls, Dowry deaths, Drowning, Rape, Interpersonal violence, Poisoning, Intimate partner violence, Work place injuries, Child labour, Violence against children, Fall of objects, Animal bites and Sports injuries.

Do you know what is the impact ?
These deaths totally disturb and devast the life of families affected. These families have gone to streets, irrevocably by these tragedies. Preventing injuries and violence, can be achieved only through a perfect co-ordinated effort by individuals, friends, families, NGO’s, transport, police, RTO and all the concerned.
Dear readers do you remember following cases? Recently in Bangalore 7 youth lost their lives during their Drunk and Drive Exercise, during night near Koramangala. The Driver was a son of MLA from Hosur. Another person due to his rash driving killed two youth who were resting in the corner of the bridge. Earlier 7 lady doctors from Davanagere died in an accident, on their way to Goa. Near Dharwad 13 people were killed and 7 were injured, during the accident between a tempo traveller and a tipper.
Dear parents, kindly question yourselves. Why such cases are increasing. The loss of life, crash of the costliest vehicles purchased by you and presented to your dearest children, cannot be available to you in good conditions. Your riches, ability to spend lakhs of rupees, your position, your influence cannot give life to your dead children. If they loose their organs, can you get them?
Guard your children and protect them
Kindly take a lot of care while presenting costly bikes and cars to your beloved children. Don’t give, anything without keeping a track on their movements. Kindly make them byheart the slogan that slow speed on road can bring them back to home safely. If your children-both boys and girls who are adolescent, are in the habit of consuming alcohol, drugs, tobacco, you have to advise them, not to consume them for the protection of their life and health.
If you don’t care now, you are the loosers. Once if you do not control, you may not get a second opportunity to see their faces. Easily we criticise that government roads are not in good conditions, Police and RTO are not checking properly. It is you and you alone are responsible for the safety, good health of your family members. Rash driving is very dangerous. Presence of a girl friend, poor mental and physical health, greater substance abuse, poorer parental relationship are associated reasons for the aggressive behaviour of youngsters.
Adolescents chit chat, viewing the mobile and messages, while they are driving. Consumption of alcohol, drugs, disturb their physical and mental status. After late night parties, children of very rich and powerful families, drive their latest model vehicles in a very speed venture, than the permitted speed along with their friends, many youth are losing their valuable lives along with murdering their own friends. My dearest parents, kindly wake up now only. Please guard your children and protect them from the cruel clutches of injury and death. Otherwise you may have to weep throughout your life for losing your dearest!
