Dr. Nasli R Ichaporia, Senior Consultant Neurologist and Director of Neurology Department Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, added that “Technology should be used wisely, and at the same time it is important for doctors to keep an eye-to-eye contact with their patients whilst managing any device for clinical decision support system. Dr Deepak Patkar Director Medical Serices and Head, Department of Imaging, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, mentioned that “CDSS along with AI allows us to prioritize patients and assist doctors in managing several disease profiles in the most efficient manner. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the mobile app Up-To-Date by Wolters Kluwer was of immense use as it was accessed by 80% of clinicians as a one-stop-shop solution to treat COVID-19 positive patients in wards, OPDs, and ICUs who could not be touched directly.According to a survey, 47% of time it helped at point of time treatment and 22% times it was used for diagnosis. This helped clinicians to access upgraded information to make better decisions in a time efficient manner”.

Dr Rahul Agarwal, Senior Consultant General Physician and Diabetologist , MD (General Medicine), Mediciver Hospitals, Hyderabad, commented, “As the rising COVID-19 cases have overwhelmed healthcare systems worldwide, the use of technology and digital platforms such as CDSS for providing personalised line of treatment for patients has been never like before. The implementation of CDSS has largely benefitted elderly and especially patients suffering from NCDs such as diabetes, kidney failure etc. CDSS tools like UpToDate has empowered our doctors to treat COVID-19 patients by managing the situation (dosage of medicines as per age and paramedical condition) through filtering research-based information especially at a time when there is shortage of beds and manpower supply.

At a time like this when India is battered by severe COVID-19 second wave and patients battling to get treated on non-Covid complicated diseases, it is important for medical fraternity to proactively make the best use of CDS system to get access to all the relevant data regarding treatment recommendation, drug information, patient case study and even a novel disease to enhance the quality of care and improve health outcomes.

Dr. Manu Chaudhary, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist, Rainbow Children’s Hospitals, Bangalore, Dr Sanjay Wazir, Neonatologist and Pediatrician Cloudnine Hospital, Gurugram,  Dr. Abhijit Paul, Care Medicine, AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata participated in the discussion.
