Embracing the Rain: Ayurveda-Inspired Lifestyle Tips for the Monsoon Season. Following these guidelines, can help to maintain health and well-being during the monsoon season. Embrace these ancient wisdoms to align your body with nature’s rhythms and enjoy a harmonious and healthy rainy season.

Our ancient scriptures say, “Yat brahmande tat pindandah,” meaning our body mirrors the universe. Even minor changes in nature significantly affect our bodies. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, provides a comprehensive guide on how our diet and daily routine should adapt to each season. Following these guidelines can lead to a healthier future. This practice is known as rituacharya, and it emphasizes aligning our lifestyle with seasonal changes.
Dietary Guidelines for the Monsoon Season
During the rainy season, our digestive power tends to weaken. Hence, it is crucial to consume easily digestible foods. Ayurveda recommends incorporating ingredients like garlic, onion, asafoetida, curry leaves, jonibella, buttermilk, and turmeric into our diet. These ingredients not only enhance digestion but also boost immunity.
Warm Water and Rain Water:
Drinking warm water is highly recommended during the monsoon. Warm water aids digestion and helps in maintaining internal body temperature. Interestingly, Ayurveda also extols the virtues of rainwater, considering it the purest form of water. To consume rainwater safely, collect it by tying a thin cloth over a steel or earthen vessel and ensure it doesn’t get contaminated.
Spices and Honey:
Spices such as coriander, cumin, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves should be used generously. These spices help control Vata and Kapha doshas and enhance digestive power. Honey, with its thermal properties, is particularly beneficial during the rainy season. It aids digestion and helps prevent common monsoon ailments such as indigestion, allergies, skin diseases, cough, blood disorders, helminthiasis, dysentery, and asthma.
Avoid Fried Foods:
This season is not ideal for consuming fried foods, as the digestive system is already compromised. Indulging in crunchy snacks during the cold weather can lead to serious health issues like diabetes and epilepsy. If you consume heavy or indigestible foods in the evening, consider skipping dinner to allow digestive system to recover.
Lifestyle Practices for the Monsoon
Yoga and Pranayama: The monsoon season is perfect for practicing yoga and pranayama. These practices help cleanse the body and mind, promoting overall health and well-being.
Moderate Sexual Activity: Ayurveda advises against excessive sexual activity during this season as it can further deplete energy levels.
Early Rising: With the sun rising earlier during the monsoon, it is ideal to wake up during Brahmi Muhurta, which is around 4:30 to 5:15 AM. Sleeping after sunrise can lead to issues like allergies and indigestion.
Avoid Napping: Daytime naps are discouraged during the rainy season as they can disrupt the body’s natural rhythms and lead to digestive problems.
Post-Dinner Routine: Ensure you sleep at least one and a half hours after dinner to aid digestion.
Warm Water Baths: Taking a bath with warm water can help prevent skin diseases that are more common during the rainy season. Using glulam (a medicinal paste) or coconut oil during baths can also be beneficial.
Dry Clothes and Skin Care: Always ensure your clothes are dry and avoid wiping your face with a wet cloth to prevent skin issues like ringworm.
