Pre-procedure care for Chemical peel

Firstly your doctor would identify whether you are an ideal candidate for a chemical peel or not.

Physical examination – This is done by doing a physical examination of the skin which includes identifying the skin tone, texture of the skin, how deep is the skin damaged, type of wrinkles or fine lines, mild or severe acne, and acne scars.

Medical history – Your doctor would take your medical history, look at your overall health status, any medications, or other treatment you are taking.

Advice – You would be advised to avoid self exfoliation of the skin by using face masks and face scrubs, doing any makeup, avoiding staying in sun for a long duration, eating a healthy and balanced diet, and maintaining fluid balance.

Procedure

Chemical peeling is done in  patient department. The skin is cleaned properly and thoroughly. Tingling or burning sensation on the skin is common with chemical peels. The burning sensation is for a short duration and could be controlled by applying a cold compress.

Light peel – The light peel is done by using cotton or a brush. A chemical solution is applied to the skin once the treatment is complete, the solution is removed from the skin.

Medium peel – Medium peel is done by gauze. The chemical solution is applied to the skin. Once the peeling is done cold compression is applied to soothe the skin. Burning might last for 10 minutes.

Deep peel – Deep peel is done by sedating. The cotton-tipped applicator is used and the procedure is done for 10 minutes.

Post-procedure care

Post-procedure care is important to post Chemical peeling. You would be advised To avoid sun exposure and the application of sunscreen would be advised. Mild redness due to peeling of the skin that appears heals slowly within 3 to 4 days. A second visit for peeling is required for all types of peels.

Complications with peeling

Few side effects like redness, burning of the skin, tingling sensation are common with peeling. They go away by themselves within a few days. Other side effects could be darkening of the skin, permanent scar, infections.
