Cochlear implant surgery on a three–year-old girl at CARE hospital

Cochlear implant surgery on a three–year-old girl was done at CARE hospital. Sri Venkaiah Naiduji, Hon’ble Vice President of India, Mr. Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, MLA, Chandragiri and Swarnabharath Trust, together contributed to help the child to lead normal life.

Hyderabad, 12th January: A group of surgeons headed by Dr N Vishnu Swaroop Reddy, Head of the E. N. T. Department and Cochlear Implant Surgeon at CARE Hospital, Banjara Hills performed a bilateral cochlear implant surgery on a three–year-old girl from Chandragiri Mandal, Chittoor district.

A Cochlear implant surgery is done when a person is suffering from severe to profound hearing loss when  hearing aids have not helped – particularly for infants and children who are learning to speak and express language.

The surgery was financed through a unique model and is one of the first in the state where Venkaiah Naiduji, the Vice President of India donated INR 2 Lakh from his salary to help the patient. Mr. Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, the MLA from Chandragiri helped sanction INR 12 Lakh from the AP Chief Minister’s relief fund and Mrs. Deepa Venkat, Managing Trustee of Swarnabharath Trust, AP and Telangana announced a donation of INR 1 Lakh towards the cost of the surgery.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr N Vishnu Swaroop Reddy, Head of the E. N. T. Department at CARE Hospital said, “The Cochlear implants are the most advanced devices for aiding hearing loss and are imported from Australia. 

They are tested on the table after Surgery by the Audiologist Dr G Srinivas and confirmed that all the electrodes are inserted fully and functional of both the ears implants are working perfectly. The implants will be switched on in about three weeks as soon as the wounds heal. CARE Hospital will also provide periodic mapping and Auditory -Verbal Therapy to the patient for a period of one year or more to help the patient gain and reach perfect speech,” he added.
