CARE hospital launches a free pre-cancer screening in Telangana

CARE hospital launches a free pre-screening programme in Telangana. The flagship programme aims at creating a socio-economic impact by saving lives through early detection and intervention.

CARE-Cancer-Screening-Program-in-HyderabadHyderabad: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, CARE Cancer Institute, Hyderabad launched a flagship program under which the hospital will provide a free screening for Cervical and Breast Cancer to all women across Telangana, the inauguration ceremony was preceded over by the Honourable Governor of Telangana.

Cancer cases are on the rise in the country, with the number of cases increasing to 300% in 2018. In Telangana, suspected cases of oral, breast and cervical cancer are much higher compared to other states, as per the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence report. An intensive survey conducted in 12 districts in 2017 has revealed 9,164 cases of oral, breast and cervical in the state against second-ranked Tamil Nadu with 4,700 suspected cases.

Although, sedentary lifestyle, rising obesity and pollution levels, smoking and consumption of tobacco and alcohol and changing dietary habits all play a major role, the main reason for the increase in the three is the absence of a proper screening protocol. According to reports, 50% of the cancer cases in India are screened at a later stage and 70% of the population with cancer lose their life to the disease.

Inaugurating the programme, Hon’ble Governor Dr.(Smt)Tamilisai Soundararajan, said, “Breast cancer emerges as the leading type of cancer among women in India and constitutes about 30% of the total cases followed by cervical cancer which contributes to approximately 6–29% of all type cancers in women.  With CARE’s flagship programme, we aim at providing free screening for Cervical and Breast cancer to all women across Telangana and thereby save lives through early detection.”

Dr Geeta Naga Sree,Surgical Oncologist CARE Cancer Institute says, “Early detection refers to measures that can be taken to diagnose cancer as early as possible, when the disease is easiest to treat. There is an urgent need for action to increase early-stage cancer detection, screening, and diagnosis to significantly improve patients’ chances of survival. With this kind of program, we can reduce the burden of the disease in the state.”

Mayur Dave,Chief Operating Officer CARE Hospitals Hitech City said, the majority of cancers are amenable to early detection. When a cancer is detected at an early stage—and when coupled with appropriate treatment—the chance of survival beyond 5 years is higher than when detected at a later stage. With this flagship program, CARE Hospitals aims at creating a socio-economic impact by saving lives through early detection and intervention.

Lt. General (Dr) AK Das,CARE Hospitals Group CMS, said, ‘It is time for us to give the women of our nation a service which will benefit generations and change the socio-economic dynamics of our vast country. I am truly humbled to be here in the presence of our Honourable Governor and we are encouraging the women and men in Telangana to take the screening program as a reason which gives meaning to life.
