Coconut Water or Narikela jala – A trendy beverage

Coconut water or Narikela jala is most important and essential to all living beings especially to the human beings and from recent years coconut water has become a trendy beverage. It is very tasty and refreshing loaded with several important nutrients, including minerals.

1. Good source of several nutrients:

Coconuts grow on large palm trees known scientifically as Cocosnucifera. Coconut is botanically considered as fruit rather than a nut. Coconut water is the juice found in the center of young green coconut. Coconut water forms naturally in the fruit and contain 94% of water and it should not be confused with coconut milk. Coconut milk contains about 50% of water and it is very rich in coconut fat. On an average green coconut provides about 0.5 to 1 cup of coconut water.

One cup (240ml) contains 46 calories as well as

Carbohydrates – 9 gms

Fiber – 3 gms

Protein – 2gms

Vitamin C – 10 % of the RDI

Magnesium -15% of the RDI

Manganese -17% of the RDI

Potassium -17% of the RDI

Sodium -11% of the RDI

Calcium -6% of the RDI

2. Have antioxidant property:

When there are one or multiple free radicals enters our body they may damage our cells and may increase the disease risk. It may cause stress to the body. Some of the researches shows that coconut water contains antioxidants which clearly modify free radicals so that they do not cause harm.

3. Good for Diabetes (MADHUMEHA)

Coconut water can easily be fit into a meal plan for people with diabetes. Some of the studies regarding diabetes shows that intake of coconut water leads to improvement in blood sugar levels and reduction in the oxidative stress.  It has also got good source of magnesium which may increase the insulin sensitivity and may help in reducing the blood sugar levels or values in people with Type2 /DM2 and prediabetes

4. Helpful in preventing kidney stones (MUTRASHMARI)

Drinking plenty of fluids or water is important for prevention of kidney stones. Research suggests that coconut water is more helpful. Kidney stones form when calcium oxalate and other compounds combines together in our urine. Study shows that coconut water along with YAVA KSHARA  is more effective for kidney stone. (Yavakshara is an Ayurvedic medicine that is used for treating urinary diseases)

5. May reduce Blood pressure (RAKTA CHAPA):

Coconut water can even help lower blood pressure. Research shows that coconut water may lower blood pressure in those with high blood pressure.as it contains an impressive 600mg of potassium i,e. (240ml). In one of the small village that is kathihalli, i have seen coconut water improving a Systolic blood pressure among many patients.

6. Beneficial after more / prolonged exercise which is known as ATIVYAYAMA:

Coconut water is very perfect beverage in restoring the hydration & replacing Electrolytes which is lost during exercise (vyayama). Electrolytes (Sodium – Potassium – Magnesium & calcium) are the minerals which plays a very important role in our body – maintaining fluid balance.
