Mangalore: Kshithijha Enterprises, Mangalore has launched Arecanut extract-based deodorant soap Pooga Singaar. The production of areca soap is claimed to be the first of its kind. Named as ‘Pooga Singaar’ (areca flower in Sanskrit), the soap is available in three varieties to add flavour to the product.
Agriculturist and Ayurveda expert Badanaje Shankar Bhat has come up with an innovative idea of producing bathing soap using areca tannin. More than 20 years of research in Ayurveda had resulted in the preparation of areca soaps. Ayurveda books say a lot about the multiple uses of areca. Consumption of areca with tobacco may cause health problems but its external use will help treat many skin problems Says Ganesh Chethan, Managing director, Kshithija Enterprises.
The soap is manufactured by the Dakshina Kannada-based Mangala Herbal Park with the combination of areca tannin with tulsi, jasmine and rose, is a form of aroma therapy. One soap bar contains the extracts of one arecanut.
Having experimented with the home made ‘Pooga Singaar’, now the product is taken to manufacturing in bulk. The soap has been tested at Bangalore Test House and has passed all required tests. The product has been manufactured as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, without using animal fat.
1. The Areca nut is the seed of the Areca palm (Areca catechu), which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa. It is commonly referred to as “betel nut” as it is often chewed wrapped in betel leaves.
2. Pooga Singar Deodorant Beauty Soap, made of areca fruit extract. This soap is invented by P. Shankar Bhat Badanaje, a farmer-cum-researcher of Vittla which is available in jasmine, rose, and tulsi fragrances.
3. Enriched with natural herbal extract of Areca fruit, regular use of soap may enhance skin complexion. Soap is effective in removing dandruff, Pimples, Dark skin patches,Heat rashes etc. It helps to heal cracks and prevents dryness of feet.
4. Areca Nut contains a large quantity of tannin, also gallic acid, a fixed oil gum, a little volatile oil, lignin, and various saline substances. Four alkaloids have been found in Areca Nut – Arecoline, Arecain, Guracine, and a fourth existing in very small quantity. Arecoline resembles Pilocarpine in its effects on the system. Arecaine is the active principle of the Areca Nut.
