One such institution that has significantly shifted over time is the concept of the undivided family. In India, where family ties have historically been deeply rooted in culture and tradition, the erosion of undivided families is becoming increasingly evident, with a parallel rise in divorces among cosmetic families.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Undivided families, also known as joint families, have long been the heart of Indian culture. These extended family units typically include multiple generations living under one roof, sharing resources, responsibilities, and a strong sense of cultural identity. The undivided family system fosters mutual support, interdependence, and a collective approach to decision-making, thereby promoting stability and harmony within the household and in the society.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, as India undergoes rapid modernisation and urbanisation, the traditional structure of undivided families is gradually giving way to nuclear families or cosmetic families. So, Governments have major role to play in this concern and also the judicial system as in many divorce cases the applicant misused the rules introduced to safeguard them. Divorces can have profound impacts not only on individuals and families but also on the fabric of society as a whole. Recognizing the significance of marital stability and the need to mitigate the adverse effects of divorces, it is imperative to implement stringent verification systems and ensure that the financial burden of divorce proceedings is borne by the applicants themselves.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">It is alarming that as young as children under the age of 5 years are hooked to watching a screen for hours can change their posture forever.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>1. Work on your posture,</strong> stretch your body for 10 minutes after every 2 hours , take a break from work or being the couch potato.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>1. Yogic practice of hand mudras</strong> similar to reflexology. Each finger represents an element ( Tatva) that helps the flow of subtle energy through the Neural Network in the body.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>2. Massage therapy a </strong>systematic review and meta-analysis of a study showed improved pain, anxiety,insomnia and depression in people.</p>

There are many dimensions of the manasa ( mind) according to the vedic texts. <strong>Memory is the root cause of many mental issues and</strong> <strong> plays an important role in mental well-being,</strong> it can create despair or miracles.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>3 things you can practice for Mental well-being:</strong></p>

Studies show that activating the brain with regular brain exercises over time increases the volume of the hippocampus, a key part of the brain&#8217;s <strong>memory.</strong> It also <strong>improves </strong>many aspects of people&#8217;s thinking. You can practice simple brain exercises everyday for 5 minutes each day.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">2. To engage in something you are passionate about for 30 minutes to an hour each day. Reading, painting, video games, singing, solving puzzels, anything that can give you joy, self appreciation and peace.</p>

It&#8217;s not good that somebody is forcing you to do them. Always keep in mind you are doing it for yourself, your health, your present and future. It should be do &#8211; or die situation for you.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>3. Regular meals at a fixed time is necessary</strong> as your body system gets accustomed to it. By maintaining this regularity the entire body system functions properly.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>4. Self motivation is the best strategy to bring your weight under control</strong>. Any force from the family or teasing from others will not help you in any way. Strong commitment from within yourself will charge you up to reach your goal of weight loss. You should understand the gain from these efforts. Otherwise inactivity will pull you down and problems may occur</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>5. Follow the principle of &#8216;Divide and Conquer&#8217;</strong>. Set a small goal,  I will try to follow the diet plan, exercise for 15 minutes and have my favourite food once a week&#8217;. Follow this for one month. In the next month slowly increase the time for exercise to 30 minutes. Starting with a big jump is not a wise step. If it fails, you may lose your enthusiasm. So be slow but steady.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;">6. According to a study report &#8220;<strong>80% of heart attacks are preventable by life style modifications</strong> when initiated early in life&#8221;. So to get a healthy life start your corrective steps now only.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;">7. In the World scenario, more and more people are changing their life style but ultimately being dissatisfied, they cannot return to their original life. According to a report by the World Watch Institute more than <strong>25% of the world&#8217;s people now enjoy the life style, which belonged to the affluent class previously.</strong> By adopting this life style obesity debt time pressure increased making their life miserable. The &#8216;State of the World 2004&#8217; commented that about 1.7 billion people have entered into a &#8216;High Consumer Class&#8217; adopting their diets, own transport and other lifestyle previously enjoyed by the people of America, Europe and Japan. Reports says &#8220;Higher levels of obesity and personal debt, chronic time shortage and a degraded environment are all signs that excessive consumption is diminishing the quality of life for many people&#8221;.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>8. Harmony of self and the environment should be the primary purpose of life</strong>. This comes from eating the right food, making your mind free from anger, jealousy, hatred, bitterness, unhealthy competition, etc. and get the right balance between body and mind by regular exercise meditation and relaxation.</span></p>

Don&#8217;t eat to beat the stress</strong> &#8211; You may not be knowing that you are munching something always from time to time. This comfort in eating is called &#8216;Psychological Hunger*. It arises from stress, boredom, frustration and many other disturbances.</span></p>

According to a Clinical Psychologist &#8220;Any psychological disturbance in an individual leads him to seek food as a solace.  Food rich in carbohydrates secrete a chemical substance &#8211; endorphin which is described as a mood upper&#8221;.</span></p>

To avoid this overeating, you may compliment yourself and others to buy a perfume or clothing rather than always eating in a restaurant. <strong>Engage yourself into any creative hobby or activity or play outdoor games with small children to keep yourself focused.</strong></span></p>

While they are invaluable resources irrespective of the location, <strong>Indian doctors have been considered the best of the lot for quite some time now.</strong> Be it tackling simpler issues like iodine deficiency or performing complicated surgery taking up longer hours, our doctors have left no stone unturned when it comes to redefining the image of what ‘good healthcare’ should look like.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Good listening skills cures 50% of the illness:</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Especially now, with people looking up to doctors and other frontline healthcare workers for protection during COVID times, <strong>the role of a doctor in our day-to-day life has only enhanced in importance.</strong> Despite all good work, one most common complaint patients have with their doctors is limited time they get during appointments. In India most doctors are overburdened, which may be a reason for the limited time; however, <strong>a doctor with <span style="color: #0000ff;"><a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://healthvision.in/how-active-listening-makes-a-person-healthier/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">good listening skills cures 50% of the illness</a> </span>without even using any medicine.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-9500 alignright" src="https://healthvision.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Dr.-C.S.-Pandav-268x300.jpg" alt="Dr.-C.S.-Pandav" width="313" height="350" />According to <strong>Dr. C.S. Pandav, Former HoD Community Medicine, AIIMS</strong>, “One of the biggest problems I have personally witnessed in doctors is the <strong>lack of listening skills.</strong> Instead of reserving their time to listen to what the patient feels or has to say, the first interaction is just the doctor talking 80% of the time. <strong>Physicians need to learn how to listen to their patient</strong> before embarking on a path of diagnosis; that is bound to save quite a lot of time”.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Over time, several doctors have come across this practice and been irked by it. Effective communication skills are extremely necessary when it comes to dealing with patients who are already disturbed and in pain. While Indian doctors have excelled in all kinds of practices, be it allopathy, naturopathy or homeopathy, they seem to lack empathy and sympathy, which are extremely critical when it comes to dealing with a distressed individual.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Medical institutions need to instil communication skills:</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To address this issue, <strong>all medical institutions need to instil communication skills</strong> in their newly graduating doctors so that change comes from the very root. Emphasis needs to be laid on medical students spending almost three months in Indian villages, interacting with people on the ground level. This <strong>village immersion course is extremely essential.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-9501 alignright" src="https://healthvision.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Dr.-G.S.-Grewal-300x300.png" alt="Dr.-G.S.-Grewal-" width="300" height="300" />Dr. G.S. Grewal, Geriatric expert &amp; president elect, Delhi Medical Association (DMA) elaborates,</strong>“Some of the problems and obstacles are known to most young graduated, one hurdle which is realised later in their career is communication with the patient. The medium of teaching in medical college is English and most patients speak in Hindi or their local language; many complaints related to diseases have colloquial words to describe them, therefore merely <strong>due to lack of proper communication many a times diseases are missed and quite often leads to patient frustration.”</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">While the <strong>lack of communication skills is one such critical issue which requires immediate expert care</strong>, several other issues continue to haunt the Indian healthcare system as well. Every Public hospital or dispensary is witness to long queues of ailing people waiting due to dearth of hospital beds. This is one reason why services in developing nations are worse than that in developed nations; in the former, physicians are only able to provide 5 minutes or so to each patient, while the latter sees doctors dedicating 30-60-minute slots to each patient!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For a Doctor to become a good Listener is more important than his Diagnosis/ Prognosis &amp; other knowledge &amp; practice skills. It is very pertinent in the Indian scenario, where the doctor-patient Ratio is amongst the poorest in the world. In such a scenario, most of the Drs have tendency to cut short on what the patient has to say (Listening) &amp; jump on to the prescription, which at times may also result in poor quality of diagnosis/ prognosis resulting in compromise in treatment!”</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Indian education system produces some of the best, most brilliant physicians and surgeons in the entire world. <strong>Adding a little empathy and enhancing their ability to listen to their patients can help these doctors prepare the perfect prescription! </strong>There is also a common phenomenon of ‘considering the doctor a god-equivalent’, which is quite prevalent in India. For such doctors, listening to their patients &amp; families comes in the way of their elated egos and hence many a times the patient is at a receiving end and not satisfied at all. The patient does not complain, since they consider the doctor to be god.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-5884 alignright" src="https://healthvision.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/HV-Jan-2019-1-300x137.jpg" alt="Active listening" width="501" height="229" />It was another busy day for Dr. Sharma.  His next patient was Umang, a young guy of the internet generation; as soon Umang sat in front of Dr. Sharma, he reeled out his symptoms and also gave the diagnosis based on his internet research.  Dr. Sharma, an elderly authoritarian GP, nearly lost his temper in this confrontation.  Taking a deep breath, Dr. Sharma gave his point of view, however, unabashedly, Umang started arguing in favour of the internet enabled self &#8211; diagnosis.  The tension was thick in the clinic, you could cut the tension with a knife.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Active listening: a two-way process</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The internet information super highway has revolutionized knowledge.  E-empowerment of the patient is a reality.  Moreover, <a href="https://healthvision.in/category/articles/general-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">health</a> websites are abuzz with health tips and recovery suggestions.  Old grandma remedies are making a comeback on the strength of internet and social messaging tools.  The doctor has to take all this into cognisance while delivering his prescription and therapy guidelines.  E-savvy doctors too are leveraging on the internet medical knowledge platforms, and constantly improving their diagnosis and prescribing or therapy delivery skills.  This is particularly so with the younger generation doctors.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The naiveté of the patient was particularly high in the pre-internet times.  However, the modern day patient has to his advantage abundant knowledge on health issues at his fingertips, thanks to the smartphone penetration.  On the medical side, it is not uncommon for doctors to get reports and case photos on whatsapp, and they provide remote diagnosis and suggestions to patients and peer – doctors.  Modern technology has facilitated communication, broken the information divide and improved health outcomes, but somewhere the human touch may also be missing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Thus, it is the era for medical professionals and patients to recast their listening attitude to incorporate a two – way process, ‘<strong>Active Listening’ &#8211; for good health! </strong> The concept of active listening was defined by the <strong>Conflict Research Consortium of University of Colorado, USA as</strong>: ‘a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding’.   So active listening implies the receiver of message shows positive response and is involved rather than being passive.  Such a person seeks clarity, has responsive facial expressions such as nodding and talking in agreement, overall there is improved information flow from sender to recipient.  Often, message senders do their job of providing the message regardless of whether the recipient has understood or not.  This leads to several errors, including medical errors such as wrong intake of medicines.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>For active listening to happen, listener should have interest</strong>, this shall translate into involvement and the listener will eventually remember the message.  Ideally a doctor must elicit active listening from a patient despite the condition of patient, and the patient’s attender though anxious, must also provide attentive listening.  The challenge in active listening is ensuring comprehension of the message.  There are several barriers to this process.  Bias or prejudice, language problem, defensiveness, memory failure and preconceived notions &#8211; all act as barriers to effective listening.  Hence, trust is the key to good active listening.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Medical practitioners too now take great pains to practice active listening, since it gives clues to the patient’s status and lifestyle.  This will enable providing the right therapeutic approach.  Thus, successful doctors enquire about the diet, past allergies, vocation, habits, co-existing diseases, medicines or healthcare products currently consumed and other lifestyle factors of patients to provide a successful therapeutic recommendation.  Several other doctors further emphasize points in their prescription and get a confirmation of the patient’s understanding of the instructions, to ensure safe and efficacious treatment.  For example, taking medicines like antiulcerant pantoprazole on an empty stomach is vital for efficacy.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Patient-centric communication by healthcare providers includes active listening.</strong>  In this era of internet enabled learning, it is inevitable that there is high tech and high touch phenomena.  Active listening by patients and healthcare practitioners will be a game changer approach, doctors stand to gain through goodwill, pharmacists will be seen as extremely helpful and patients themselves will gain valuable tips for their improved health.  Active listening encourages people to talk beneficially.  <strong>Active listening is a common sense approach for gaining insights into issues that will help make a person healthier.</strong></p>
