Narayana Nethralaya in collaboration with Acer India has launched the PC + tablet based software, “VisioNova” designed for children suffering from Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). This initiative by Narayana Nethralaya and Acer India aims at breaking down barriers and providing the patients with better access to treatment.

Acer VisioNova, a path-breaking innovation was conceptualized as a mobile alternative to on-site therapy for CVI children that will offer them the standard of care. Narayana Nethralaya as a part of its ‘Buds to Blossoms’ initiative provides dedicated therapy programs to help children develop and improve motor, cognitive and visual abilities that significantly improve their quality of life.

Cortical Visual Impairment :

Cortical Visual Impairment is a condition of bilateral visual loss caused due to injury of visual areas in the brain without significant eye or anterior visual pathway impairment. CVI is currently an emerging cause amongst children across India. With 161 children in every 100,000 born with CVI, India has declared it to be a high priority issue and classified it as one of 30 conditions that all babies must receive mandatory screenings. These children with CVI have great difficulty in performing visually guided activities and these therapies rely on machines that are bulky, expensive and require the child to be in the hospital for the entire duration of six-to-nine-month therapeutic process.

In order to address this, Acer provided PC and 100+ tablets under CSR to kick-off this noble cause. Acer has also further intent to supply around 2000 tablets for patients where patients can pay the hospital a small, refundable deposit and receive the tablet for use from the comforts of their home and still continue treatments even with COVID disruptions.

The tablet will offer CVI patients exercises that can benefit and help them develop and improve their deficient skills and visual abilities that significantly improve the quality of life. Also, since a number of specialised therapies that are deployed require expensive equipments that need the child to be present at the center for the entire duration of the treatment, this tablet will allow remote therapy under the mentorship of Narayana Nethralaya’ CVI experts, making this treatment accessible to the outreach.

On the occasion of this launch, Mr. Harish Kohli, President & Managing Director, Acer India said, “It is a matter of pride for us to join this innovative collaboration with Narayana Nethralaya where technology helps break barriers to improve lives. Acer VisioNova engineered the overall solution, comprising both the software and the hardware. At Acer, we always believe in closing the gap between people and technology and to meaningfully improve clinical outcomes and reduce the systemic cost of healthcare, VisioNova will help patients with timely access to care when they need it.

“With Buds to Blossoms and Acer India initiative, we are aiming to make differently-abled children independent and integrate them to the normal stream of society. This collaboration is important for us to help integrate the CVI patients. Acer VisioNova is a next-gen software which is a dedicated solution to help over hundreds of visually impaired children from their homes,” said Dr. Bhujang Shetty, Founder & Chairman, Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute, Bengaluru. With Acer Visionova and ‘Buds to Blossoms’ initiative, today is even better poised to help improve the lives of these innocent children. Buds to Blossoms and Acer are proud to be by their side and enable them to live a life full of joy and independence.

Bengaluru : Dr B H Banarji, Senior Consultant, Department of Orthopedics of Sakra World Hospital has created a milestone in arthroscopy by inventing a new form of effective, simple and durable method of knotting, known as the Banarji Knot. This knotting method is a low profile, non-bulky, more secure, double slide locking knot which can be utilized in arthroscopic surgeries. It has been used in more than 250 surgeries till date and has been found to be very effective. The analytical research study on the Banarji’s Knot is published in the Journal of Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine in October, 2021.

Banarji Knot, an idea initiated to benefit the patient’s surgical outcome, is specifically used for arthroscopic surgeries – knee or shoulder repair, where tendon repair or ligament repair is needed. This knot was aggressively tested by a bio medical testing lab at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and approved by the authorities for surgical procedures and proves to be better than other existing prevalent knots.

Arthroscopic knot tying is a crucial component for a successful arthroscopic surgery. For an effective knot in the arthroscopic procedures, it is important for a knot to possess the following characteristics such as, ease of application, reproducibility, ability to slide through arthroscopic cannulas, ease of setting the lock, knot profile, and reliable initial security. Banarji knot effectively qualifies all the above characteristics and it is easy to learn, master, and reproduce.

Speaking of the advantages of the Banarji Knot, Dr. B H Banarji said, “It is my pleasure to introduce you to Banarji Knot, an easy, reproducible knot that can be beneficiary for patients undergoing keyhole surgeries of shoulder and knee. This knot was invented and innovated during this pandemic, After a extensive research process, 5-6 knots were brought in form and this knot was finalized. Compared to other knots, Banarji Knot consists of simple procedures that can be learnt and implemented in a very short span. The loop strand passes through two loops once it’s tightened and locked at different points, thus making it stronger and increasing its tensile strength. The knot also is designed with a low profile, thereby it doesn’t create any bulky knot, which leads to impingement.”

Dr Banarji B.H is a renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon specialised in the field of Shoulder and Upperlimb disorders and Arthroscopy & Sports medicine. He is one of the most renowned surgeons in the shoulder & Upper limb sector. He was one of the first surgeons to perform key hole surgeries of Shoulder and Elbow joint in Karnataka and since then, has performed a huge number of keyhole surgeries which includes, Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair, Arthroscopic Bankart repair, Arthroscopic Frozen Shoulder Release, Arthroscopic Shoulder Decompression, Arthroscopic Nerve Release, Arthroscopic Bone-block Reconstruction and Shoulder replacement Surgeries like Total Shoulder Replacement, Reverse Shoulder Replacement and Total Elbow Replacement.

Bengaluru, March, 2022 – Age is not always a risk factor to get cured and bounce back on your feet, was proved recently by the doctors of HCG Cancer Hospital, when they successfully diagnosed and treated Muniraju (name changed), aged 83 years, suffering from carcinoma rectum or cancer of the rectum who was treated by eminent senior doctors at HCG Cancer Hospital, Bengaluru using chemoradiation and advanced laparoscopic procedures.

For Muniraju, at 83 years of age, the biggest pain that had started to disrupt his daily life and health, was the continuous bleeding from his rectum and experiencing pain and difficulty while passing stool for close to a month and a half. He had also reportedly lost weight and had a reduced appetite. When alternative medicine treatment could not help relieve his symptoms, he was advised to undergo Colonoscopy, which revealed, an ascending colon of 0.5 cm, and presence of sessile polyps (flat mass arising from the mucosal layer) and a semi circumferential ulcer proliferative friable growth (an ulcerous growth) located about 8 to 15 cms from the anal curvature. The patient had significant medical history – diabetes, hypertension and ischemic heart disease – Muniraju’s ulcer was sent for biopsy for further evaluation. Colonoscopy using Fiber Optic Camera Visualization was performed and the biopsy was also conducted which revealed cancerous ulcer growth in the rectal area.

Upon consulting Dr Jagannath Dixit, Consultant – Surgical Oncologist at HCG Hospital Bengaluru, Muniraju underwent further diagnostic tests including whole body scan, FDG PET CT Scan which confirmed the stage of cancer and showed irregular thickening in the upper rectal area. After a complete evaluation of the case, a multi-disciplinary approach was implemented after connecting with medical and radiation oncologists. Dr Jagannath Dixit advised External Beam Radiation Therapy using IMRT Technique targeting 1/3rd of upper rectum and the pelvic lymph nodes along with concurrent Chemotherapy. Post his Chemoradiation, an expert GI cancer surgical team led by Dr Jagannath Dixit performed anterior resection of the rectal cancer using advanced technology and this process was conducted by making small incisions to remove the cancerous growth, few healthy tissues, lymph nodes around the rectum.

Compared to laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery has a few advantages such as 3D vision, better range of movements with instruments which helps in operating the parts of pelvic region in a safe and precise manner. The advantages of such robotic procedures are mainly less pain, early recovery and a smaller number of stains in the hospital with very less blood loss. This also facilitates for the faster recovery of the patients.

Commenting on the procedure Dr Jagannath Dixit, Consultant – Surgical Oncologist said, “Such comorbidities are common among aged patients and over 6% of the patients aged 80 – 90 suffer from rectal cancer. On performing such complex procedures using robotics, the complexities are reduced and the success rates constantly improvises. I’m glad I was able to execute this procedure and at the end of the day, the patient’s relief and the big glowing smile from the patients and relatives is what truly matters. “

Muniraju, now healed and leading a healthy life, shared, “At my age, pain and bleeding while passing stool disrupted my life as I found it difficult to sit for long hours. I thank the team and Dr Jagannath Dixit at HCG Hospital Bengaluru for healing my wound and relieving me from the pain.”

Reflecting on the journey, Dr Ajay Murdia – Founder & Chairman of Indira IVF Group says, “Our first success story was born when a young child, Navya, came into this world in 2011. From one life back then to 1 Lakh a decade hence, it brings me immense joy to see how far we have come in our vision to help couples who face challenges with growing their family. We are determined to break people free from the shackles of infertility and provide medical solutions for their treatment.”

Scoliosis is a disorder of the spine, and its surgeries are generally done only in large hospitals in big cities. Kaka-Ba performs scoliosis surgery on 17-year-old Surat girl. Girl from Surat has undergone surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, a disorder in which an abnormal curvature of the spine appears in late childhood or adolescence, at Bharuch’s Kaka-Ba hospital, which is run by Cadila Pharmaceuticals’ CSR arm.

Dency Akbar, a resident of Amroli in Surat, was detected to be suffering from adolescent idiopathic scoliosis 4-5 years back. Instead of growing straight, her spine had developed a side-to-side curvature and was turning into an ’S’ shape. “Dency was in extreme pain because of the disorder for some time. Her deformity had also started to worsen, which is why we decided to perform the surgery on her spine. This technically demanding surgery and not the normal spine surgery, Hence, we used the Neuro monitoring System for the surgery, a high end instrument which helps/ guides the surgeon to avoid any damage to nerves” says Dr. Alpesh Patel of Kaka-Ba Hospital.

“This was a technically demanding and rare surgery, but we accomplished it successfully. The X-rays also show the difference in the shape of the spine, which is straight now,” he added. The cost of the surgery was approximately Rs. 5 lakh, but Dency’s family did not have to pay any money, as the entire cost was covered under the central government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme.

While the surgery has changed Dency’s life, it is also a big achievement for Kaka-Ba Hospital. Kaka-BA hospital is established by the visionary founder of Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited, Shri Indravadan A Modi to provide quality healthcare services at affordable cost to the poor. Kaka-Ba hospital has been instituted in the memory of his cousin who died due to typhoid due to lack of medical facilities at Hansot, a small village in South Gujarat.

About Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often is diagnosed in adolescents. While scoliosis can occur in people with conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most childhood scoliosis is unknown. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some curves worsen as children grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.

Children who have mild scoliosis are monitored closely, usually with X-rays, to see if the curve is getting worse. In many cases, no treatment is necessary. Some children will need to wear a brace to stop the curve from worsening. Others may need surgery to straighten severe curves.

Its symptoms include:

Uneven shoulders

One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other

Uneven waist

One hip higher than the other

One side of the rib cage jutting forward

A prominence on one side of the back when bending forward

Deformity increase- lung capacity decrease

Hampers overall growth

“Scoliosis surgeries are very risky and are generally done only in large hospitals in big cities by or under the close supervision of highly qualified super-specialists. That Kaka-Ba Hospital was able to perform the surgery successfully speaks volumes about the quality of our doctors and healthcare personnel, and the advanced technology and equipment available,” says Dr. Bharat Champaneria, Trustee of Indrashil Kaka-Ba and Kala-Budh Public Charitable Trust, which runs the Kaka-Ba hospital.

Prostate enlargement gets innovative treatment method: Moses Laser Technology. A live surgery performed at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur during APAC Moses master campaign conference.

Bangalore May 21,2021: Today our healthcare industry is scaling new heights owing to various innovations the sector. From technology to new treatment methods, there are new advancements in the healthcare science every day. The APAC Moses master campaign conference which was held virtually today, was a stage to showcase technological advancements in the medical field. From India, Dr. Manohar. T, Chief Urologist, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur performed a live surgery demonstrating Moses technology (MOLEP) to treat prostate enlargement. Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur is the first hospital in India to treat prostate enlargement using Moses technology and has completed more than 100 surgeries using this innovative technique.

In Covid times, this new laser treatment has come as a boon to patients suffering from prostate enlargement or kidney stone as it reduces the hospital stay and the surgery time. It can be performed as a day care procedure in many cases. A live surgery session was performed by Dr. Manohar. T, Chief Urologist to exhibit the efficiency of this treatment method. Kalpesh (name changed), a 72 -year-old person suffering from prostate enlargement underwent this surgery at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur.

Kalpesh was treated for prostate enlargement 10 years back using a conventional method. But recently, Kalpesh started to develop symptoms of urine blockage and hernia. During the consultation he was again diagnosed with prostate enlargement which required immediate surgery. Understanding the efficiency, precision and better results of this laser treatment, this time Kalpesh agreed to undergo the prostate surgery using moses technology.

What is Moses technology?

Moses technology uses high power holmium laser (120 watt) to perform endourology procedures more efficiently. Here small internal endoscopes are used to remove stones, faster and more efficiently. The laser pulse can reach farther distance and deliver enhanced energy which may decrease blood loss and operating time. Also with this technology prostate of any size can be treated and the procedure will be painless. This technology will help people who are suffering from conditions related to cardiac problems or those on blood thinners.

Dr Manohar T, Chief Urologist

Speaking about the procedure Dr Manohar T, Chief Urologist, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur (A unit of Manipal Hospitals) said “The benefit of this procedure is that there is only 0.1% possibility for re occurrence in 10 years whereas it is more that 15% in 5 years in conventional method. Also, the person’s age is not a constraint. This technology is a paradigm shift in transforming the treatment methodologies and has proven to be efficacious and safe to treat the prostate condition. Though there are various other laser treatments available to treat prostate enlargement, Moses laser treatment works efficiently due to its high power and the patient can be discharged on the same day catheter free”.

Prostate enlargement is one of the common problem faced by many men in their old age. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) which is non-cancerous occurs when the cells of the prostate gland begin to multiply. These additional cells may lead to the enlargement of the urethra that might block the flow of urine. Though this condition is completely different from prostate cancer, prostate enlargement can affect the quality of life.

Doctors from Japan, China, Korea and India presented cases from their respective countries. Healthcare professionals and doctors from across the world participated in the conference and witnessed the latest innovations in the healthcare sector.

Parkinson’s disease, a nervous disorder can affect anyone in their middle age. Identifying the condition in its initial stage and managing it well is crucial step. The use of advanced technology in managing the condition is a boon for many patients with Parkinson’s disease. One such technology has helped Anil, a 58-year-old patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Recently he underwent deep brain stimulation surgery using directional leads at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur and he is now managing his life effectively.

Anil, who was working as an engineer at a leading firm started facing difficulty in driving and frequently losing balance while walking. He immediately consulted the doctor and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It has been 13 years since, and Anil has been continuously taking medications. As Parkinson’s is a condition which progresses with time, the effectiveness of the medications started to fade with time. Upon suggestion from the doctor, Anil decided to undergo DBS surgery to manage his condition. Diagnosing all the parameters, doctors suggested him about the new technique of using directional leads in deep brain stimulation surgery.

How does this new technique work?

DBS surgery has been an effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease. To improve the efficiency of the treatment, directional leads are used to adapt the volume of stimulation relative to the required position. This gives the ability to provide targeted stimulation. Using directional leads for deep brain stimulations will help in improving the mobility of the patient with Parkinson’s condition and reduce the side effects.

Speaking about the condition Dr.Guruprasad H, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur said, “When Anil came to us, he had stopped responding to medications. As the dosage of his medications were already increased earlier, we suggested him to undergo deep brain stimulation procedure which was focused on helping him manage the condition better”.

Dr.Raghuram G, Senior Consultant, Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur said, “These surgeries are performed with high precision which are guided by latest neuro-navigation techniques. In DBS, electrodes are implanted into the brain area which generates electrical impulses to control the abnormal brain activity. Using directional leads over conventional leads in the surgery will help us to steer or move the current towards the part of the brain which benefits the patient and move it away from the area which produces side effects. Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur is the first hospital in India to perform deep brain stimulation using directional leads”.

Anil has now been discharged from the hospital and the initial response is exemplary. Speaking about his recovery, Anil said, “As soon as I heard about the new procedure, as an engineer I started to research about it and was inquisitive about the surgery. I discussed with the doctor and was thoroughly convinced about the treatment. I would like to thank the medical team of the hospital for the successful treatment and the care. After the procedure, my ability to walk has improved significantly. I am now able to do my daily chores much better than before.”

Deep Brain Stimulation is an effective treatment for any kind of movement disorders and has been used to regulate neural activity through delivery of electrical stimulation to key brain structures. This has been used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease with a high rate of success.

“BMT is a very important therapy in the management of patients with blood cancers like Myeloma, Leukemia, Lymphoma & certain non-cancerous blood disorders. The science and art of BMT has evolved to such an extent that even older patients can now be taken up for BMT successfully. This transplant in the 56-year-old patient had certain peculiar manifestation known as Auto Graft versus host disease during the course, which was successfully dealt with”, said Dr. Ragesh R. Nair,Director- Haemato Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant, Meitra Hospital.

Dr. Ragesh R. Nair who performed the transplant was trained from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS-Delhi). He has the experience of performing exceptionally complex transplants of patients from Kerala to Northern India to across the globe from Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia, various African nations, UK, Netherland, Switzerland, USA, Canada and the CSR Countries. He is adept at performing adult and pediatric bone marrow transplants for not just malignant blood disorders such as a range of blood cancers, but also for non-malignant blood disorders.

Meitra hospital with its advanced facility is set to offer superior treatment for not just malignant blood cancers but also non-malignant conditions requiring bone marrow transplants. There are three common types of BMT currently being performed globally like Autologous Transplant – which uses your own blood-forming cells, Allogeneic Transplant – which uses blood-forming cells donated by someone else and Haploidentical Transplant – a type of allogeneic transplant.

Bangalore : 53-year-old Rajesh (name changed to protect privacy) works as an auto driver in Bengaluru. He developed an ulcer on his tongue 2 months ago and tried local remedies for the same. He never consumed tobacco and hence did not suspect anything serious out of the ulcer.

A known person then referred him to Dr Satish C, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL. Dr Satish C suggested a CT scan and biopsy of the ulcer which revealed cancerous growth on half the tongue which extended to the lymph nodes of the neck. To stop the spread of cancer, radical surgery was performed that involved removal of 3/4th of the right tongue and lymph nodes from both sides of the neck.

After the removal of the cancerous growth, reconstructive surgery was done on 5th March 2021. Dr Satish C, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL who performed the surgery stated, “Generally, a part of the flesh along with skin from patient’s outer body part is reframed into tongue and sewn together in such cases. But, we came up with a very unique solution for this case.

The tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body. It primarily facilitates eating and speaking. The moisture on the tongue is very much needed for us to speak clearly. General reconstruction with skin as the outer flap is very uncomfortable for patients. Because of hair follicles in them, there is always hair growth on the outer layer of the new tongue. Also, the skin is extremely dry compared to the regular tongue which makes the patients feel thirsty always. To avoid these inconveniences, we harvested apart from the patient’s stomach and made it into the brand-new tongue. The stomach flap was reversed to make the outer layer of the tongue.”

Dr H V Madhusudan, CMD, TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL said, “The new tissue was then attached to the already present 25% of the remaining tongue. The complex surgery that lasted for over 8 to 10 hours is fruitful now. The anaesthetic team and post-surgery ICU care helped the patient greatly to recover well. The newly attached flap looks almost identical to his original tongue and stays moist. The patient can have normal food and speaks well. This is a first of its kind surgery in Karnataka and Dr Satish C and the team at TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL has successfully given hope to several such patients.”

Mr Rajesh, who got a new lease of life after this particularly rare surgery commented: “I was already in huge financial crisis and affording such complicated procedure was really difficult. But, TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL stood by me at all stages and I am healthy and speaking again due to this. If not for this team, I would have been in great trouble.” Dr Deepak Haldipur, Director, TRUSTWELL HOSPITAL and Dr N S Chandrashekar were present.
