Even during tablet coating, if the cooling and drying are not done at the desired rate with the proper quality of compressed air, then it leads to the rough, translucent coating which is unsatisfactory in appearance.

Furthermore, excessive moisture can initiate injurious activities of micro-organisms. It is responsible for increased microbial activity in the organic material that indirectly contributes to the destruction of the material. The mold, mildew, and fungi are already present in the air and germinate when met with a conducive combination of temperature and humidity. The microbial growth causes the decomposition of the material which in turn leads to the mechanical weakening of the product.

Here, it is important to note that the menace of moisture is not just limited to the manufacturing of medicines and other pharmaceutical products but it can contaminate the product even during the packaging. Hence, it is important to address the issue at every level of the product cycle and one must not relax just at the production stage.

Belmore, the brand name of Bempedoic acid, is a novel drug for the treatment of high LDL-cholesterol. Ahmedabad-based Cadila Pharmaceuticals has launched a novel drug for the treatment of high LDL cholesterol for the first time in India.

To be sold under the brand name Belmore, Bempedoic acid is a one-of-its-kind drug for the treatment of high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol. High LDL cholesterol can lead to serious life-threatening heart complications due to blockage in blood vessels.

As per published data, more than 30 % of adults in urban areas and 20 % in rural areas in India are suffering from this silent disease. Statins are the group of drugs used to control LDL cholesterol but in more than 80 % of the patients, these drugs either do not give optimum control or are not tolerated.

Pharma major, Cadila Pharmaceuticals has received a licence to manufacture a generic version of Pfizer’s oral antiviral Covid-19 medication – nirmatrelvir, through a license from Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), an UN-based public health organisation working to increase access to life-saving medicines for low- and middle-income countries.

Cadila will cater to Indian and export markets since many countries with high COVID 19 burden lack access to effective therapy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was the first regulatory agency to authorise the use of PAXLOVID,  nirmatrelvir tablets and ritonavir tablets, co-packaged for oral use to treat high-risk mild-to-moderate Covid-19  adults and paediatric patients above 12 years of age weighing at least 40 kg.

Pfizer’s PAXLOVID™ consists of nirmatrelvir, which inhibits a SARS-CoV-2 protein to stop the virus from replicating, and ritonavir, which slows down nirmatrelvir’s breakdown to help it remain in the body for a longer period at higher concentrations. PAXLOVID is administered as three tablets (two tablets of nirmatrelvir and one tablet of ritonavir) taken together orally twice daily for five days, for 30 tablets. The drug is available by prescription only and should be initiated as soon as possible after the diagnosis of Covid-19 and within five days of symptom onset.

The FDA granted the emergency use authorisation to PAXLOVID based on clinical data from Phase 2/3 EPIC-HR (Evaluation of Protease Inhibition for Covid-19 in High-Risk Patients) trial, which enrolled non-hospitalised adults aged 18 and older with confirmed Covid-19 at increased risk of progressing to severe illness. The data showed an 89% reduction in the risk of Covid-19 related hospitalisation or death from any cause in adults treated with PAXLOVID, compared to placebo, within three days of symptom onset (primary endpoint).
