Many people think rheumatoid arthritis is simply “joint pain” caused by aging or excessive work. But, Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues, especially the synovium — the thin protective lining surrounding the joints. Normally, the immune system protects the body from harmful bacteria, viruses, and infections. However, in rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system becomes overactive and begins attacking the joints themselves.
This attack causes inflammation, pain, stiffness, swelling, and eventually destruction of cartilage and bones. Over time, untreated rheumatoid arthritis may lead to joint deformities and loss of mobility. Unlike ordinary arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is systemic, meaning it can affect the entire body.

How Does Rheumatoid Arthritis Develop?
In a healthy person, the immune system works like a defence army. In rheumatoid arthritis, this defence system becomes confused and starts attacking the body’s own tissues. White blood cells accumulate in the joints and release inflammatory chemicals. These chemicals cause:
• Swelling of the joint lining
• Thickening of the synovium
• Damage to cartilage
• Weakening of ligaments and tendons
• Erosion of bones
As the disease progresses, the joints lose their normal shape and function.
The condition commonly affects – Fingers, Wrists, Toes, Ankles, Elbows, and Knees. It usually affects both sides of the body equally.

Common Symptoms
The symptoms may begin slowly and worsen over time. Common signs include:
• Morning Stiffness – Stiffness in the joints after waking up is one of the earliest symptoms. The stiffness may last for more than 30 minutes or even several hours.
• Joint Pain and Swelling – Painful swelling in the fingers, wrists, ankles, and toes is common. The joints may feel warm and tender.
• Difficulty in Cold Weather – Symptoms often worsen during cold weather or when working in cold water.
• Fatigue and Weakness – Many patients experience tiredness, body discomfort, and reduced energy levels.
• Mild Fever – Some individuals may develop low-grade fever due to ongoing inflammation.
• Reduced Joint Movement – As inflammation progresses, daily activities such as holding objects, climbing stairs, or walking may become difficult.

Can Rheumatoid Arthritis Affect Other Organs?

Yes. Rheumatoid arthritis is not limited to the joints alone. If not treated properly, it may affect:
• Heart – increasing risk of heart disease
• Lungs – causing inflammation or breathing problems
• Eyes – leading to dryness and irritation
• Blood vessels and nerves
• Skin and muscles
Therefore, early diagnosis and proper management are extremely important.

Natural and Supportive Ways to Manage Rheumatoid Arthritis
Although rheumatoid arthritis may not have a complete permanent cure, proper lifestyle modifications, medical treatment, and natural therapies can significantly reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
• Anti-Inflammatory Foods – Diet plays a major role in controlling inflammation.
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation naturally. They suppress inflammatory cells responsible for joint damage. Good sources include – Flaxseeds, Walnuts, Chia seeds, and Fish oil supplements. Including these regularly in the diet may help reduce joint stiffness and swelling.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Rheumatoid Arthritis
According to Ayurveda, rheumatoid arthritis is often associated with the accumulation of “Ama” (toxins) along with aggravated Vata dosha.

The Power of Turmeric
Turmeric contains an active compound called curcumin, which is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.A simple remedy:
• Mix one teaspoon of turmeric with warm water
• Add two pinches of black pepper powder
• Drink daily
Black pepper improves the absorption of curcumin in the body.

Ginger Tea for Pain Relief
Ginger contains natural compounds called gingerols that help reduce pain and inflammation. You can prepare herbal ginger tea by boiling – Ginger, Cumin, Coriander, and Cinnamon. Strain the infusion, cool slightly, and add honey before drinking. This herbal drink may help reduce swelling, stiffness, and discomfort.

Heat Therapy – Applying warmth to affected joints helps – Dilate blood vessels, improve circulation, relax stiff muscles, and Reduce pain. Warm compresses or heating pads can provide significant relief, especially during cold weather.

Epsom Salt Therapy – Epsom salt is rich in magnesium, which helps calm the nervous system and relax muscles. Adding Epsom salt to lukewarm water and soaking the affected joints may help – Reduce swelling, Relax muscles, and Ease pain and stiffness.

Castor Oil Therapy – Castor oil is one of the beneficial remedies for arthritis. Methods commonly used include:
• Applying warm castor oil externally on painful joints
• Gentle heat application after massage
• Internal use under medical supervision to improve bowel movements and reduce toxin accumulation
Proper Ayurvedic guidance is essential before internal consumption.

Panchakarma Therapies- Panchakarma treatments are considered highly supportive in chronic inflammatory disorders. Among them – Basti therapy, Abhyanga, and Swedana – may help reduce stiffness, improve mobility, and support detoxification.

Importance of Exercise and Movement
Complete rest is not advisable in rheumatoid arthritis. Gentle movement helps maintain flexibility and muscle strength. Recommended Activities – Swimming, Cycling, Walking, and Stretching exercises. These low-impact exercises strengthen muscles without putting excess pressure on the joints.

Role of Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and mind-body practices can greatly help patients cope with chronic pain and stress. Helpful practices include: Gentle yoga asanas, Pranayama, Mudras, and Meditation. These improve – Flexibility, Blood circulation, Mental calmness, and Stress management. Stress reduction is important because stress can worsen autoimmune inflammation.

Living Positively with Rheumatoid Arthritis
It is a lifelong condition for many individuals, but it does not mean life has to stop. With:
• Proper diet
• Regular exercise
• Timely medications
• Natural therapies
• Positive mental health
• Consistent medical guidance
many patients can successfully manage symptoms and lead active, fulfilling lives. Early diagnosis and a disciplined lifestyle are the keys to preventing complications and protecting the joints from permanent damage.

Rheumatoid arthritis is much more than ordinary joint pain. It is a complex autoimmune disease that requires long-term care and awareness. Ignoring the symptoms can lead to severe joint damage and complications affecting other organs. However, combining modern medical care with healthy nutrition, Ayurvedic support, physical activity, and stress management can bring remarkable improvement. The journey may be challenging, but with the right approach, patience, and consistency, better health and comfort are truly possible.

Neem oil has been treasured in Ayurveda for centuries as one of nature’s most powerful healing remedies. Extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (*Azadirachta indica*), neem oil is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, neem is often referred to as “Sarva Roga Nivarini,” meaning “the healer of all ailments,” because of its wide range of therapeutic uses.
Today, neem oil continues to gain popularity across the world as a natural remedy for skin care, hair care, oral hygiene, and overall wellness.

Neem in Ayurveda: A Sacred Medicinal Plant
According to Ayurveda, neem has a bitter taste (tikta rasa) and cooling energy (sheeta virya). It is especially effective in balancing the Pitta and Kapha doshas, which are associated with inflammation, heat, toxins, and skin disorders.
Traditionally used neem oil to purify the blood, support healthy skin, protect against infections, and promote wound healing. Every part of the neem tree—including its leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds—has medicinal value, but neem oil is considered particularly potent for external applications.

Health Benefits of Neem Oil
• Supports Skin Health: Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce acne, redness, itching, and irritation. It may also help in conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, and dry skin. Neem oil contains essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which nourish the skin and help maintain moisture balance. Its natural healing properties can also support faster recovery of minor cuts and wounds.
• Helps Fight Acne Naturally: Neem oil helps control excess oil production and fights acne-causing bacteria. Its soothing effect may reduce swelling and redness associated with pimples. In Ayurveda, neem is believed to cleanse toxins from the body, which is often linked to clearer skin and reduced breakouts.
• Promotes Healthy Hair and Scalp: Neem oil is commonly used as a natural remedy for dandruff, scalp irritation, and hair fall. Its antifungal properties help combat dandruff-causing microbes, while its nourishing qualities support scalp health. Massaging diluted neem oil into the scalp may improve blood circulation and strengthen hair roots. It is also traditionally used to manage lice and itchy scalp.
• Natural Antifungal and Antibacterial Agent: Neem oil has strong antimicrobial properties that make it effective against various bacteria and fungi. Ayurvedic medicine often uses neem preparations to help prevent infections and support natural healing. Because of these properties, neem oil is sometimes added to soaps, creams, shampoos, and herbal formulations.
• Supports Oral Health: Neem has long been used in dental care. Neem twigs were traditionally chewed to maintain oral hygiene and healthy gums. Neem oil may help reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth and support gum health when used carefully in herbal oral care products. Its antibacterial action may also help reduce bad breath and plaque build-up.
• Useful in Wound Healing: Neem oil’s antiseptic and soothing properties make it beneficial for minor cuts, wounds, and insect bites. Ayurveda values neem for its ability to cleanse affected areas and support natural tissue repair. Its cooling nature may also provide relief from itching and irritation.

Common ways to use neem oil:
• Mix a few drops with coconut oil for scalp massage
• Add diluted neem oil to face packs
• Use in herbal hair masks
• Apply carefully to affected skin areas
• Add small amounts to homemade soaps and skincare products

Precautions and Side Effects
Although neem oil is natural, it should be used with caution.
• Always perform a patch test before applying it to the skin
• Avoid direct use of concentrated neem oil on sensitive skin
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult doctor before use
• Neem oil should not be consumed unless advised by a doctor
Some individuals may experience irritation or allergic reactions, especially if the oil is used in excessive amounts.

Neem Oil in Modern Wellness
Modern scientific research has also shown growing interest in neem’s medicinal properties. Studies suggest that neem contains active compounds such as nimbidin, azadirachtin, and fatty acids that contribute to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. As people increasingly seek natural and herbal wellness solutions, neem oil continues to bridge ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern holistic healthcare.

What Is a Stroke and How Does It Occur?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted. The brain needs a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients through blood. If this supply is interrupted—even for a few minutes—brain cells begin to die.

There are two main types of stroke:
1. Ischemic Stroke (Blockage Type): This is the most common type of stroke. It happens when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked.
It can occur in three main ways:
• Clot formation inside the blood vessel: Due to unhealthy diet, high cholesterol, lack of exercise, or other lifestyle issues, fatty deposits can build up in the arteries. This narrows the blood vessels and forms clots that block blood flow.
• Clot traveling from another part of the body: Sometimes, a clot formed in the heart or elsewhere travels through the bloodstream and gets stuck in a smaller artery in the brain.
• Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Often called a “mini-stroke,” this is a temporary blockage of blood flow. Symptoms may last only a few minutes or hours and then disappear. However, TIA is a serious warning sign of a major stroke in the future.

2. Hemorrhagic Stroke (Bleeding Type)
This type occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding inside or around the brain. The most common reason for this is uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP). When blood pressure remains high for a long time, it weakens the blood vessel walls, making them more likely to rupture.
Hemorrhagic strokes are often more severe and can have serious consequences.

Who Is at Higher Risk?
People with the following conditions must be especially careful:
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• High cholesterol
• Obesity
• Family history of stroke
If these conditions are ignored and not treated properly with medication and lifestyle changes, the risk of stroke increases significantly.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Stroke
Several unhealthy habits contribute to stroke:
• Smoking and tobacco use
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Lack of physical activity
• Frequent junk food consumption
• High mental stress
• Irregular eating and sleeping habits
• Sudden and unhealthy changes in daily routine
Over time, these habits damage blood vessels and increase the risk of both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

How Can Stroke Be Prevented?
The good news is that most strokes are preventable.
Here’s how:
• Control blood pressure and diabetes regularly
• Maintain healthy cholesterol levels
• Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
• Exercise at least 30 minutes’ daily
• Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
• Manage stress through meditation, yoga, or relaxation techniques
• Visit your family doctor every 5–6 months for regular check-ups and basic tests
Early detection and control of risk factors can significantly reduce the chances of stroke.

What to Do If a Stroke Occurs?
A stroke is a medical emergency. Immediate hospital admission is crucial. Delays in treatment can cause permanent brain damage.
Doctors may provide:
• Clot-dissolving medications (for ischemic stroke)
• Surgery (in cases of severe bleeding or major vessel defects)
• Blood pressure control and supportive care
• Early treatment improves survival and recovery chances.

Recovery After Stroke
Recovery can take six months to one year, depending on severity. Rehabilitation plays a major role.
Helpful treatments include:
• Physiotherapy (exercise therapy) to regain strength and movement
• Speech therapy (if speech is affected)
• Occupational therapy for daily activities
• Supportive therapies like yoga and breathing exercises (pranayama)
Some traditional approaches such as Panchakarma therapies—Virechana, Basti, and Nasyakarma—along with acupressure and natural therapies, may support recovery when used alongside modern medical treatment and under professional guidance.
Yoga, especially certain pranayama techniques and mudras, can help in prevention and improve overall brain health.

Stroke is a serious but largely preventable condition. The key lies in awareness, early diagnosis, healthy lifestyle choices, and regular medical follow-up. Prevention is always better than cure. But if a stroke does occur, timely treatment and proper rehabilitation can help the patient regain independence and improve quality of life. Taking care of your brain today can protect your future tomorrow.

For many people, the arrival of winter brings not just cooler air, but a familiar fear—worsening joint pain, knee stiffness, hip discomfort, migraines, and body aches. Instead of enjoying the pleasant chill, winter often feels like a season of suffering. But why does pain increase during winter, and more importantly, what can be done to prevent and relieve it?

Why Does Pain Increase in Winter?
During winter, the body naturally tries to preserve heat. As a result, blood flow to peripheral tissues and joints reduces, while circulation prioritises vital organs like the heart and brain. Reduced blood flow leads to stiffness, inflammation, and heightened pain sensitivity—especially in people with arthritis, old injuries, or nerve-related pain such as migraines.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, winter aggravates Vata dosha, which is cold, dry, and mobile by nature. Since cold weather shares these same qualities, Vata imbalance becomes more pronounced during this season. Excess Vata is directly associated with pain, stiffness, cracking joints, anxiety, and disturbed sleep.

Foods That Help Relieve Winter Pain
Ayurveda emphasises balancing Vata by consuming foods that are warm, nourishing, oily, and grounding.
• Good fats play a crucial role. Ghee, sesame oil, oils made from millets, and nuts help counter dryness and coldness.
• Gradually increase ghee consumption during winter. This improves digestion, strengthens tissues like bones and marrow, and calms Vata and Pitta doshas.
• Nutrient-rich foods such as meat soups, bone broths, and marrow-based preparations provide deep nourishment and improve joint health.

Herbal Decoction for Winter Pain
A traditional remedy to control winter pain:
• Take 4 leaves of Vitex negundo leaves (lucky soppu – Sanskrit: Nirgundi)
• Add a small piece of Guduchi (amritaballi)
• Add a small piece of ginger, a pinch of cumin, and turmeric
• Boil in 4 glasses of water and reduce to 1 glass
• Strain and drink twice a week
This decoction helps pacify Vata and reduces inflammation and pain.

Daily Routine to Prevent Pain
Your daily habits play a major role in winter wellness.
• Oil massage (Abhyanga) is one of the most effective Vata-balancing practices. This is why oil bath traditions are followed during Diwali, which marks the onset of winter.
• Massage the entire body—or at least painful areas—with warm sesame oil, coconut oil, or mustard oil.
• After massage, apply gentle heat using warmed lucky soppu, Castor plant leaf (audala soppu), or Arka leaves (Ekka) to the affected area for quick relief.
• People with rheumatoid arthritis should consult a doctor before oil massage.

Other effective applications include:
• Grinding lucky soppu and audala soppu into a paste, warming it, and applying locally.
• Mixing ¼ teaspoon mustard powder with water, heating the paste, and applying it to painful areas to relieve winter-induced pain.

The Healing Power of Sunlight
Ayurveda recommends short sun exposure in the morning during winter. Sunbathing improves circulation, strengthens bones, balances doshas, and naturally reduces pain and stiffness.

What Makes Winter Pain Worse?
Avoid habits that aggravate Vata:
• Frequent fried and junk food
• Daytime sleeping
• Eating late or excessively at night
• Cold drinks
• Lack of physical activity
• Nutrient-poor diets
These habits increase stiffness, slow digestion, and worsen joint and nerve pain.

Therapies That Offer Long-Term Relief
Under expert guidance, treatments such as:
• 10-day abhyanga therapy
• Panchakarma
• Mud therapy
• Natural and Ayurvedic remedies
can help maintain overall health and reduce pain not just in winter, but throughout the year.

A Pain-Free Winter Is Possible
Winter does not have to be a season of torture. By understanding why pain increases and adopting Ayurvedic foods, daily routines, and therapies, you can keep Vata dosha under control and enjoy the warmth and comfort of a healthier winter. When followed consistently and correctly, these practices help you move through winter with less pain, better mobility, and greater well-being.

There are some broad principles that apply to all. These simple practices helps to keep your gut healthy and this in turn will improve your overall health.

Medical experts also call our “Gut” as second brain because the enteric nervous system relies on the same type of neuron and neurotransmitter that are found in central nervous system. The food that we consume is digested and nutrients are absorbed and lead to blood stream and delivered throughout the body. This mechanism is possible only if when our digestion system is healthy. If there is digestive issue our body might have nutrient deficiency and simpler problems such as acne, hair fall. Long term digestive issue may even lead to Auto immune diseases.
According to Ayurveda Agni is the invariable agent in the process of Paka (digestion, transformation). Ingested food is to be digested, absorbed and assimilated, which is unavoidable for the maintenance of life, and is performed by the Agni. Pitta dosha is responsible for such functions as digestion, metabolism, thermoregulation, and energy homeostasis and resides in the mid gut area. If the Agni of a person is vitiated, the whole metabolism in his body would be disturbed, resulting in ill health and disease.
Hence, Agni is said to be the base of life. When the microbiome is in balance it contributes to many health benefits, but when out of balance, it can cause problems in the gut and other areas of the body. Dysbiosis arises when the delicate and elaborate ecology of microbial communities are disrupted by internal or external factors. A disrupted microbiome is characterized by the overgrowth of one or more of the different microbial colonies. A complex interaction between the microbiome and immune systems may result in an inflammatory state. Now that we understood the importance of digestion and gut health let’s see few signs of healthy gut.
1. Regular bowel movement: After a healthy gut has absorbed all usable nutrients from food, you don’t need what remains. It’s essential to get rid of it because this is what keeps the body functioning properly and efficiently. If not eliminated, it may lead to toxin accumulation in our body leading to different health problems
2. Healthy Skin: Several lines of evidence have shown a connection between gut problems and skin disorders. Anything that irritates the lining of your gut can cause it to become inflamed. This could be anything like food allergens, alcohol, medications, antibiotics, common food stuffs of the modern diet like food additives and artificial colouring and it is for this reason eating out is believed to unhealthy. Digestive system and intestines, influences your overall health which ultimately improves your skin.
3. Good energy levels: Microbes residing in your gut assist your digestive tract in processing all the food that you consume, and one key part of this process is absorbing the nutrients in the variety of foods that you eat. Better the absorption greater the energy level in your body.
4. Regular menstrual cycle: Healthy Gut is happy hormones. Did you know the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle are influenced by your gut? Yes you heard it right; the microbiome synthesizes nutrients and assists with digestion. It releases chemicals that regulate mood and metabolism and immune function, and if all that wasn’t enough, it also helps to control the level of estrogens.
5. No Bloating or acidity: Gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and heartburn are all signs of an unhealthy gut. So, if you are going through these, you should not ignore these and address the issue.

How to improve Gut health in simple ways
Although the market is saturated with expensive probiotics that can give your microbiome a boost, it turns out you can actually change your internal ecosystem simply by adapting your lifestyle. You can nurture a diverse gut microbiome for good gut health without supplements, fortified foods or microbiome tests.
1. Include natural Probiotics like curd, buttermilk in your regular diet
2. Include good amount of cooked veggies daily
3. Chew food well
4. Exercise regularly
5. Manage your sleep cycle
6. Drink good amount of water
7. Avoid frozen food

Remedial Measures:

Let us revive respect for Betel Leaf – A Sacred Leaf and make the most of its Time-Tested Health Benefits in the right, Ayurvedic way.

Even during auspicious ceremonies, at least two betel leaves and one areca nut are traditionally required. However, the reputation of the betel leaf—known for its immense health benefits and medicinal value—has suffered due to its association with tobacco. Just as good company uplifts and bad company degrades, the association of betel leaf with harmful substances like tobacco has led to a loss of its rightful respect.

Today, let us rediscover the unique medicinal and cultural significance of this revered leaf.

Ayurvedic Perspective
According to Ayurvedic texts, betel leaves (Piper betle) are praised as a special herb with diverse health benefits. The Bhavaprakash Nighantu, a classical Ayurvedic dictionary, describes them as:
• Pungent and heating in nature
• Aids digestion
• Improves taste and removes bad breath
• Balances Kapha and Vata doshas
This is why the tradition of chewing betel leaf after meals is so common in many Indian households.

Health Benefits
• Improves Digestion: Stimulates the release of digestive enzymes, making it beneficial after heavy, sweet, or hard-to-digest meals. It helps relieve gas, bloating, and constipation.
• Fights Bad Breath: Its natural compounds reduce Kapha and Vata imbalances, thereby eliminating bad breath and acting as a natural mouth freshener.
• Supports Oral Health: Thanks to its antibacterial properties, betel leaf helps fight bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and throat infections.
• Boosts Immunity: Rich in antioxidants, it helps prevent diseases and is especially noted for its role in preventing conditions like diabetes and cancer.
• Relieves Pain and Inflammation: Contains eugenol, an anti-inflammatory agent that helps with joint pain, swelling, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue.
• Treats Respiratory Issues: Acts as an expectorant—useful in treating colds, coughs, asthma, and other respiratory disorders.
• Balances Blood Sugar and Cholesterol: Studies suggest it lowers blood sugar levels and reduces the absorption of bad fats in the intestine, helping maintain good cholesterol levels.
• Supports Wound Healing and Skin Health: Its antimicrobial and antioxidant nature helps in healing chronic wounds and treating various skin issues.

Provides Nutrients
• Betel leaf contains: Vitamin C, Beta-carotene (provitamin A)
• B-complex vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate
• Minerals: calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, selenium

How to Consume Betel Leaf (The Healthy Way)
Those with good health or suffering from Kapha and Vata-related issues can chew a betel leaf once a day after meals. A traditional healthy combination includes:
• Betel leaf
• A small amount of lime
• Areca nut
• Anise
• A piece of Jyeshta Madhu (Licorice)
• Kachu
• A small clove
This preparation is called Tambula in Ayurveda, and it acts as a powerful digestive and detoxifying remedy.

Warnings and Precautions
• Do not mix betel leaf with tobacco. This is what makes it carcinogenic and toxic, destroying its health-promoting qualities.
• Excess consumption can lead to problems like dizziness, vomiting, and increased body heat.
• Individuals who are underweight, pregnant, weak, or suffering from serious illnesses should consult a physician before consuming betel leaves.

Betel leaf is not only a symbol of auspiciousness in rituals but also a gift of nature with remarkable healing properties. However, its true benefits can only be realized when consumed in its pure, unadulterated form—without tobacco or other harmful additives.

Fatty liver is defined as the accumulation of fat in more than 5% of hepatocytes. Fatty liver now a days called as Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) until recently it was called as NAFLD. the more serious form of this is Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH)1.
The prevalence of adult NAFLD in India has been reported between 6.7% and 55.1%. The prevalence of paediatric NAFLD in India varies from 7.3% to 22.4% in the healthy population2.

The prevalence of NAFLD increases with age. While it was once considered a condition primarily affecting adults, it is now increasingly being observed in children. This rise is largely attributed to the growing prevalence of overweight and obesity among school-going children. One of the key contributing factors is the high consumption of junk food, which often contains ultra-processed ingredients and excessive amounts of sugar.
Additionally, physical activity among children has significantly declined. Several reasons contribute to this trend, including lack of time for play, limited access to open spaces near homes or schools, absence of nearby friends, parental restrictions on outdoor play, and in some cases, the child’s own disinterest in playing outside. All these factors combined are creating a concerning environment that predisposes children to fatty liver disease at an early age. Overweight and obesity result from an imbalance of energy intake (diet) and energy expenditure (physical activity)
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has a strong association with conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Hypothyroidism, Hyperlipidemia, and Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD). Individuals with these conditions are at a significantly higher risk of developing fatty liver.
As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 (2019-21), overall, 24% of Indian women and 23% of Indian men are overweight or obese. There has also been an increase in the percentage of children under 5 years who are overweight (weight-for-height) from 2.1 percent in NFHS-4 (2015-16) to 3.4 percent in NFHS-5 (2019-21) at All-India level3

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), individuals who had fatty liver disease during childhood are at an increased risk of developing serious complications later in life. These complications include cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. Furthermore, they are also more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. This highlights the importance of early detection and lifestyle interventions in children to prevent long-term health consequences. NAFLD is becoming the leading cause for liver transplantation in India.

Natural History of NAFLD:
Up to 90% of patients with NAFLD have simple steatosis which carries a relatively benign prognosis, with no overall increase in mortality. However approximately 10-30% have the potentially progressive form of NAFLD.

CLINICAL FEATURES:
• NAFLD is usually asymptomatic although it may be associated with fatigue and mild right upper quadrant discomfort. It is commonly identified as an incidental detection of fatty liver on ultrasound or during work up for raised liver enzymes.
• Jaundice and other symptoms and signs of liver failure only occur when patients may have advanced to cirrhosis or HCC.
• Some of the patients are detected to have above findings during evaluation for other illness or while being evaluated for symptoms such as dyspepsia and generalized weakness.

Fatty liver disease often progresses silently, as patients typically do not exhibit symptoms in its early stages. However, if left undiagnosed, it can advance to more severe forms such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. The good news is that if identified early, fatty liver is reversible, and the liver can return to a healthy state with appropriate lifestyle changes and interventions.
Therefore, raising awareness about the condition, its silent nature, and the importance of early detection is crucial to prevent serious health outcomes in the future.
In an effort to raise global awareness about fatty liver disease and its potentially serious health consequences, the Global Liver Institute (GLI) initiated the observance of Global Fatty Liver Day. This important health awareness day was first celebrated in June 2018. Since then, it has been observed annually on the second Thursday of June.
The primary goal of Global Fatty Liver Day is to educate the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about the rising burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The campaign encourages early screening, lifestyle modifications, and timely medical interventions to prevent progression to severe liver conditions such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.

Prevention And Management
• Current treatment comprises life style modification to promote weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity through dietary changes and physical exercise.
• Weight reduction of 7 to 10% will show significant improvement in fatty liver.
• Avoid consuming sugary beverages, as they contribute significantly to fat accumulation in the liver and overall metabolic imbalance.
• Avoid a high-calorie diet and instead include adequate amounts of fiber, protein, and healthy fats to support overall health and liver function.
• Avoid processed and ultra-processed foods, including packaged items, as they contribute to poor liver and metabolic health.
• Ensure adequate daily water intake to support liver and overall health.
• Maintain a positive mindset and an active lifestyle to support long-term health.
• Avoid over eating.
• Consider starting intermittent fasting with a 14-hour fasting window for better metabolic and liver health.

Constipation is a common issue many individuals face today, often dismissed as minor. However, its impact on overall health can be significant. Beyond the discomfort of stool retention in the intestines, chronic constipation can affect the brain, liver, and immune system. This highlights the need to address the underlying causes rather than resorting to quick fixes through medication.

Common Causes
Constipation can result from a variety of factors, including:
• Lifestyle Habits: Late-night sleeping, waking up late, and inadequate physical activity disrupt the body’s natural rhythm.
• Dietary Deficiencies: Low fiber intake and excessive consumption of dry, bland foods lacking healthy fats contribute to the problem.
• Health Conditions: Disorders like Parkinson’s disease, paralysis, colon cancer, and intestinal blockages can impair bowel movements.
• Medication Side Effects: Certain medicines may induce constipation as a side effect.
• Ignoring Natural Urges: Suppressing the need to urinate, pass stool, or release gas can disrupt normal digestive functions, as per Ayurvedic principles.

Ayurvedic Perspective
Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of constipation through lifestyle modifications and natural remedies. Consuming excessive dry and bland foods is discouraged, as it disrupts the body’s natural lubrication. Additionally, forceful defecation is strongly advised against to avoid complications like hemorrhoids and fissures.

Effective Remedies for Constipation
1. Dietary Changes:
• Incorporate fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, fenugreek, raisins, spinach, and flax seeds.
• Include a small portion of yogurt or buttermilk at the end of meals to promote healthy gut bacteria.
• Reduce excessive intake of coffee or tea, which can contribute to dehydration.
2. Hydration:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Ayurveda recommends consuming three-quarters of a liter of water before sunrise for energizing and detoxifying effects.
3. Physical Activity:
• Regular physical exercise and specific yogasanas like Shashankasana, Pavana Muktasana, Uttanapadasana, and Surya Namaskara can enhance intestinal mobility.
• Practice Apana Mudra daily to stimulate digestion and bowel movements. Apana Mudra should be made for ten to twenty minutes a day. If the tips of the thumb, middle finger and ring finger are joined and the remaining fingers are kept straight, Apana Mudra is formed. Do this on both hands.
4. Natural Remedies:
• Soak raisins, dates, and figs in the morning, consume them at bedtime, and follow with warm water.
• For hard stools, drink warm milk with gulkand in the evening.
• Aloe vera, when consumed in small quantities regularly, aids in relieving constipation.
• For those with obesity or diabetes, half a spoon of Triphala powder with hot water at bedtime can help.
• Individuals with dry or thin bodies may benefit from ghee and Jeshtamadhu powder in hot water before sunset.

5. Stress Management:
Practice mindfulness, meditation, or pranayama to calm the mind and balance Vata.

6. Specialized Ayurvedic Advice
• Drink twenty to twenty-five ml of castor oil with hot milk or hot water once a week or fortnight on an empty stomach in the morning. A weekly or fortnightly dose of castor oil helps to cleanse the intestines. You may have two to four times loose stools and the intestines will be cleansed. However, frequent use should be under medical supervision.
• Pregnant women should prioritize natural options like milk, ghee, butter, basil leaves, and black beans and consult their doctor for other remedies.

Constipation is not just an inconvenience; it signals underlying imbalances in the body. By adopting a holistic approach that combines dietary changes, proper hydration, physical activity, and Ayurvedic remedies, one can effectively manage and prevent constipation. Addressing the root cause rather than relying on quick fixes ensures long-term digestive health and overall well-being.
