Why kidney disease in children is increasing?

Why-kidney-disease-in-children-is-increasingWhy Kidney Disease in children is increasing? Globally, prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children is 18.5-58.3 per million children. However, under reporting due to lack of recognition suggests a higher prevalence in children. The top cause of paediatric Kidney Disease (CKD) is congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) at 50%, followed by hereditary nephropathies and glomerulonephritis.

Obesity in children is a new problem worldwide and is a major risk factor for CKD. Infants of low birth weight and small for gestational age have an increased risk of developing End-stage renal disease (ESRD) in adolescence. As the paediatric obesity problem rises and the low birth weight population ages, we may encounter a potential shift in the epidemiology of paediatric CKD.

It is advisable to encourage children to spend one hour of physical activity every day, ensuring sufficient fluid intake and following a healthy diet. Increased awareness is needed in children for early diagnosis and implementation of prevention and treatment measures.
