Research shows that Mental Well-being impacts people’s coping effectiveness, relationships, performance, mood, emotional balance, and also physical health.

Hyderabad. 25th June, 2020: TRA Research, a consumer insights and brand analytics company, released a whitepaper today tracking the Mental Well-being of citizens across urban India during the lockdown period. The survey was conducted across 16 cities between 23rd March and 21st May 2020. The study measured Health Worry, Economy Worry, Family Worry and Financial worry of citizens and their ability to cope with them.

The demographic pattern of the Mental Well-being Index (MWBI) shows that citizens of Delhi (NCR) and Guwahati display the highest mental strength in their ability to cope with their anxieties since the corona virus spread started in India. Hyderabad had 87% Mental Well-being Index score displaying ‘Excellent’ Mental ability. Indore and Chandigarh, both at 78% are rated ‘Very Good’ on Mental Well-being.

However in the South, most cities showed greater vulnerability in coping with their Covid worries with Chennai having the lowest MWBI score at 43% followed closely by Kochi at 45%. Nagpur was also in the same range with a 44% score.

TRA Research, a comniscient group company, is a consumer insights and brand intelligence Company dedicated to understanding and analyzing stakeholder behavior through two globally acclaimed proprietary matrices of Brand Trust and Brand Desire. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, said that “Research shows that Mental Well-being impacts people’s coping effectiveness, relationships, performance, mood, emotional balance, and also physical health. The necessity of measuring Mental Well-being is crucial as the most important indicator of how people, cities and countries may get impacted when faced with such a severe crisis, and how they emerge in its wake”.

“The sharpening coronavirus curve, a long-drawn lockdown, with related health, economic and financial insecurities have pushed Indian citizens into a wave of mental wellbeing anxieties without enough coping mechanisms.” N. Chandramouli added elaborating on the findings of report. “Mental Well-being is ‘bi-directional’, implying that mental illnesses are not merely consequences of the pandemic, but an inability to deal with them effectively can lead to a greater collective impact of the disease”, TRA’s CEO said.

Delhi citizens display outstanding mental well-being index and Hyderabad stands at 3rd with 82% MWBI display ‘excellent’ mental well-being position, Ahmedabad is at lowest at the end of lockdown 3.0 : TRA whitepaper.

Mental Wellbeing is measured as a person’s ability to cope with various worries they may encounter. It is the sum of the cognitive, behavioural, emotional and spiritual well-being of a person. Worries may be real or imagined, but the easiest way to explain worry is as ‘advancement of anxiety’. Coping counterbalances worry, and it is a person’s ability to deal with responsibilities, problems, or difficulties successfully or in an adequate manner. During a serious and continued crisis like the current lockdown, the coping ability may increase or decrease against worries depending on several personal and environmental factors. The first edition of TRA’s whitepaper Corona virus consumer Insights – 1 was published on 24th April 2020. This whitepaper compares the change Mental Well-being of citizens from Lockdown 1.0 to Lockdown 3.0.

Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, India’s leading consumer insights and brand analytics company said, “Delhi (NCR) citizens display an ‘Outstanding’ rating in the Mental Well-being Index, with the citizenry’s coping skills bettering their worries. Guwahati at 89% MWBI and Hyderabad at 82% MWBI both display ‘Excellent’ Mental Well-being. Indore displays an unchanged MWBI score at 76% and continues to display ‘Good’ Mental Well-being.” Ahmedabad displays the lowest Mental Well-being at 25% followed by Chennai at 28% and Kolkata, facing the dual crises of Covid-19 and Amphan is at 29% MWBI. Along with these cities, Nagpur (36%), Kochi (37%) and Coimbatore (39%) also display ‘Very Poor’ Mental Well-being, Chandramouli added.

Dr. Jalpa Bhuta, Consultant Psychiatrist, practicing at Global Hospital and Hinduja Khar, observed, “The study shows that cities like Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai are not coping too well as compared to most others and combined health and economic anxieties are more prominent in these cities. It is important for authorities to invest in more detailed studies of citizens’ mental well-being to address these issues. Mental health is as important as physical and economic well-being, but being a silent problem, it often gets overlooked. The need of the hour for everyone is to keep a positive attitude, high resilience and a strong spiritual faith, all of which contribute to coping ability and mental well-being.”

Four cities showed improved Mental Well-being between Lockdown 1.0 and Lockdown 3.0. Delhi (NCR) was leading and the city displays Outstanding Mental Well-being at 107% with Coping higher than Worry. The city also shows the highest rise in Mental Well-being Index (rise of 44%) from Lockdown 1.0. Lucknow showed a 27% improvement in the Mental Well-being Index to now display Good on the MWBI scale. Mumbai has a rise in MWBI of 26%, though still at a Poor on the MWBI metric. Hyderabad is the only other city where Mental Well-being Index has shown a rise of 18%, rising from Good to Excellent Mental Well-being. All other cities either did not show any change in the MWBI or showed a decrease in Mental Well-being.

The City Mental Well-being heat map shows the data in a different format, clearly showing the deterioration of Mental Wellbeing in a majority of the cities with significant exceptions as stated in the above paragraph (Green indicates better MWBI, and colour changes progressively toward Red showing worse MWBI).
