Bangalore, June 27, 2022: Cataract is the leading cause of vision loss in the country; however, it is treatable with a simple procedure with over 98% success rate. According to the research done by the National Eye Institute, it has been found that 9 out of 10 people who undergo cataract surgery get clear vision. Cataract also most commonly affects people in the age group of 40 and above. On the occasion of Cataract Awareness Month, Pristyn Care has launched “The Great Indian Cataract Survey Report” which aims to create awareness and promote holistic eye-care. The survey was conducted with over 1000+ respondents across metros as well as the data analyzed by the Pristyn Care Data Lab on cataract surgeries performed till now.

According to the survey, more than 50% of Indians are delaying cataract surgeries. Most common misconceptions include losing eyesight, painful procedures, or a long recovery period when it comes to cataract surgery. Among the top criteria for undergoing cataract surgery, 52% of Indians choose specialized, highly experienced surgeons, 41% opt for advanced technology, and 26% make the decision based on the location of the surgery, i.e. Eye hospital and clinic. Affordability and cost of the surgery ranks last at 24%. On the survey findings, Dr. Kripa Pulasaria, Ophthalmologist said, “While there can be multiple reasons for cataract delay, we at Pristyn Care believe that it is important to address patient concerns and spend time with them one-on-one. Patients who understand the treatment and benefits of advanced technology are generally not anxious while undergoing the surgery. Fears of pain, surgical complications, or losing eye-sight can be mitigated with appropriate preoperative education.”

Watch our video: Computer Vision Syndrome

According to Pristyn Care’s Data Lab which also studied 1 lakh+ cataract patient queries and 7000+ cataract surgeries done by the company, 59% of cataract surgeries are in the age group of 56 and above. Analysis of data further indicates growing cataract cases in the younger population, a condition widely believed to impact the elderly. The risk factors may be prolonged exposure to UV rays, early onset of diabetes, smoking, alcohol, and environmental factors like food adulteration and pollution.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Garima Sawhney, co-founder at Pristyn Care, said, “Cataract is the major cause of reversible blindness and visual impairment in the country. According to Pristyn Care’s Cataract survey report, we have observed that lack of access to information, treatment and accessibility are the main reasons for delay among Indians. Cataract surgeries are the most common and frequently performed as compared to other elective procedures. We are committed to introducing advanced treatments for better and quick recovery. We also spoke to the patients who have undergone cataract surgeries and 83% agreed that their pre-surgery inhibitions were unfounded. In fact, 97% of patients would also recommend cataract surgeries to others.”

Pristyn Care is one of the largest cataract surgery providers in the country. It surveyed 7 metros including NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. The company is also offering free eye check-ups and free consultations in its effort to promote eye care.

Pristyn Care’s health report aims to provide a comprehensive view of men’s health and insights on elective surgery-related trends in the country.

Men’s Health report highlights:

1. 76% of men going for Gynecomastia (male breast reduction surgery) are between 21 to 30 years.

2. More than 50% of men in the age group of 26-35 undergo circumcision.

3. 61% of men in the age group of 26-40 have undergone piles surgery.

4. 8% of cataract cases are now appearing in young male adults of the age group of 21-40 years.

5. Hernia is more prevalent in the age group of 21- 40 with 45% of men undergoing the surgery.

Social consciousness and increased health awareness is driving more young male adults to take preemptive measures for elective procedures like Gynecomastia surgeries and circumcision. As per the Men’s Health report, 76% of men going for Gynecomastia surgeries (male breast reduction) are between 21 to 30 years of age. Doctors observe both medical and cosmetic reasons for the increase in Gynecomastia surgeries among young male adults.

Pristyn Care receives an average of 60,000-70,000 queries for Gynecomastia surgeries annually. This shows that there is an increasing physical, social, and emotional need for surgical corrections among young men in India. Dr Sanjit Gogoi says “As the boys grow up and go through their adolescent phase, they become inquisitive and start noticing a difference in their own body structure as compared to the people around them. Hence, this structural difference makes them seek medical attention. Most men would want to look “normal” and would want to do so during the peak of their hormonal phase, which is in the 3rd decade.”

The report also highlights that close to 53% of the men who underwent preemptive circumcision are in the age group of 26-35 year. According to Dr. Haridarshan SJ, “Any problems related to the foreskin are a common cause of surgery. Circumcision reduces the chance of getting prostate cancer, viral infections like HPV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).”

More young men, particularly in the age group of 26-40 years, have gone through piles surgeries. The data analysed revealed that 61% of the total piles surgeries done by Pristyn Care were from this particular age group. The most common cause of Haemorrhoids/Piles is hereditary. A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, low fiber diet, lifting heavy weights and sitting for long hours are the primary causes of the increase in cases amongst young male adults.

Men’s behaviour towards healthcare is changing:

Commenting on the findings, Dr Vaibhav Kapoor, co-founder at Pristyn Care, says “Indian men’s behaviour towards healthcare is changing. Non-life threatening diseases such as piles, hernia, and cataract which are most common in our country are delayed because it’s difficult to find the right surgeon, and hospital and manage post-operative care. On the occasion of International Men’s Health week and as a leading healthcare provider, our emphasis is to bring the focus on men’s health. Our aim is to encourage Indian men and their families to take control of male health issues with proper care and regular check-ups.”

Analysis of data further indicates growing cataract cases in the younger population, a condition widely believed to impact the elderly. “We’ve seen 8% of cataract cases are now even appearing in men between the age group of 21- 40. We also found that younger men were more affected than women. The risk factors may be prolonged exposure to UV rays or sedentary lifestyle, early onset of diabetes, smoking and alcohol and other vices, environmental factors like food adulteration and pollution. Regular eye check up, regular exercise and a step towards a healthy lifestyle helps improve overall health.” said Dr. Kripa Pulasaria, Ophthalmologist.

There are three ways in which Urban Company identifies a service partner for doctor consultation. Either the service partner self-reports herself as sick, or their body temperature is above 99-degree Fahrenheit in the daily check-ups, or their AarogyaSetu app status is “at-risk” or “unwell”. Thereafter, free doctor consultation is facilitated by one of Pristyn Care’s super-specialist doctors, trained in COVID-19 assessments. If advised by the doctor, the service partner is tested for COVID-19 through Pristyn Care’s network of 50+ ICMR approved partnered labs across 20 cities. These tests are mostly done through a home collection of samples by trained phlebotomists equipped with PPE kits. Till the test results are declared, partners are required to self-quarantine and can avail benefits of Urban Company’s paid sick leave program.

Through Pristyn Care’s partnership with Urban Company, we are enabling the community of service partners to get access to healthcare services. This will empower them to seek timely treatment post early detection of the symptoms. All of Pristyn’s clinics and partner hospitals across its 20 cities follow strict COVID protocols of social distancing, temperature checks, and hygiene. Every treating Doctor and frontline medical staff is not only COVID screened but also equipped with PPE kits and other safety gear.
Talking about the partnership, Urban Company’s Co-founder Abhiraj Singh Bhal said, “We have put in place several safety protocols to combat COVID-19. These include distribution of over a million masks & gloves, daily temperature checks, 7-day hygiene training program, use of disposables &single-use sachets, mandatory use of the AarogyaSetu app, etc. Our partnership with Pristyn Care is a step in this direction. It offers all our service partners free telemedicine consultations, and wherever needed, support for COVID-19 testing. We strongly believe in proactively fighting against COVID-19, and also reducing the stigma associated with the disease.”

Pristyn care had also launched a dedicated helpline number 801-000-2266 for addressing any query related to COVID-19. These online consultations is helping people seek advice from experts without having to travel, thereby reducing the risks of exposure and spread. The test can be booked on the website or on call post an online doctor consultation. Since the launch in April, till date, telemedicine has received a great response. The number of queries per day has increased by about 10x across India with 7x growth from areas outside Tier-1 cities.

Pristyn care launches #ConsultFirst campaign on world health day reiterates the importance of seeking expert medical opinion during COVID-19.

New Delhi, April 07, 2020: Amidst the current lockdown due to COVID-19, it has become difficult for patients with various health issues to visit doctors and receive proper treatment. Due to this, many individuals tend to self-diagnose and self-medicate rather than consulting a doctor, especially for symptoms like cough, cold, headache, aches, and pain, etc. People tend to account for a change in weather, lack of sleep or improper diet. However, these issues could be initial signs of an underlying disease that can go undiagnosed. Hence, consulting a doctor remains imperative.

On World Health Day, Pristyn Care has launched #ConsultFirst – a digital campaign to reiterate the importance of consulting a doctor first. Pristyn Care’s founders, associated doctors, surgeons, and employees have pledged to consult a medical practitioner first in case they or any of their family members develop symptoms of any disease rather than attempting to self-diagnose and self-medicate, which can be detrimental.

To address the concerns of patients, while at the same time helping to minimize the burden of the coronavirus pandemic on the Indian healthcare system, Pristyn Care has set up an end-to-end ecosystem of telemedicine. The company has also launched a dedicated helpline number 801 000 2266 for addressing any query related to COVID-19. These online consultations will help people seek advice from experts without having to travel, thereby reducing the risks of exposure and spread. Telemedicine will act as a safety valve for India’s strained healthcare system, thereby increasing the citizen’s safety and bolstering the workforce to screen many more patients than in face-to-face encounters.

On the campaign launch Dr. Vaibhav Kapoor, Co-founder, Pristyn Care said, “In these times of social distancing when people are confined to their homes, it is extremely essential for everyone to first consult a doctor regarding the symptoms of any disease they perceive. We have set up a dedicated helpline so that people can access a medical practitioner through a single phone call. The convenience of getting expert advice over a call can go a long way in preventing harm from self-medication. This campaign is an effort to encourage a habit of #ConsultFirst to #GetWellSooner.” Website link – https://www.pristyncare.com/
