• 50 years of age and above have highest commonness of prediabetes.
• 2^nd highest prediabetics are from the age group of 36 to 50
• Occurrence of prediabetes in male was around 25% while in female it was 23%

November 15, 2020: Neuberg Diagnostics, India’s 4^th largest diagnostic chain, led a study on the occurrence of prediabetes in 5 cities viz. Ahmedabad (Neuberg Supratech), Bengaluru (Neuberg Anand), Chennai (Neuberg Ehrlich), Kochi (Neuberg Diagnostics) and Hyderabad (Neuberg Diagnostics). The study evaluated 4.53k fasting blood sugar test samples of all age groups which was collected from October 2018 to October 2020.

The outcome showed that of all age groups, 24% of the people had borderline levels of blood sugar i.e. were prediabetic. The highest was noticed among people above 50 years age at 68%; followed by 36 to 50 years of age was 24%. The prevalence for below 35 years of age was 8%.

Dr. Sandip Shah, Executive Director, Neuberg Diagnostics said, “Every individual nowadays is at risk of having or developing diabetes, and the solution is through regular checking of blood sugar levels. Recently, it can be observed that people ponder on body mass index (BMI), and treat it as the eventual yardstick for their health status. Nevertheless even individuals with balanced BMI can have diabetes. It is observed that healthy looking people with borderline diabetes. So undoubtedly, healthy lifestyle is not a gauge of absence of diabetes.”

He added, “Genetics effect the tendency of individual having borderline diabetes. Parents with diabetes should ensure that their broods keep check of their sugar levels from 18 years of age. Parents should be vigilant of other symptoms in younger children. Early recognition of pre-diabetes can help them to avoid it.”

Dr. Sujay Prasad, Medical Director, Neuberg Diagnostics said, “Before getting a diabetic, a healthy person pass through a phase of prediabetes. This phase could be a few months to some years based on lifestyle and diet. During prediabetes phase, blood sugar is raised, but not sufficient to gratify the international criteria for diabetes. This awareness will help persons with prediabetes to manage their sugar levels and avoid becoming diabetic. Regular checking is a best method to be aware of prediabetic and avoid advancement to diabetes.” Study found that about 0.32% of prediabetics were from 0-18 age group. On this, Dr. Prasad added, “person can become prediabetes at any age though with advance age, the risk is more complex.”

Diabetes is the foremost silent disease all over the world. With alertness, timely verdict & treatment, and the right modifications in diet & lifestyle, helps in reversing prediabetes, and avoid becoming diabetes.”   For this study, the typical fasting blood sugar test value 100 to 125 was regarded as prediabetics.

Mr. Gopal Krishnan is a Commerce Graduate, an Associate Member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and Diploma in International Financial Reporting set and Accredited by Association of Chartered Certified Accountants UK. Prior to joining Neuberg, he served as the CFO at Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals Limited. In his earlier assignments he held responsible positions at Uttam Sucrotech international Limited, EID Parry (India) Limited and Paharpur Cooling Towers Limited.
