Gurugram, November 17, 2020: Fortis Healthcare today announced that Dr Bishnu Panigrahi has re-joined the company as Group Head, Medical Strategy and Operations in order to make a more substantial contribution to the patient care and clinical excellence parameters. In his earlier stint, Dr Panigrahi spearheaded medical operations at Fortis Healthcare from January 2012 to August, 2018. He was instrumental in making Fortis, the destination of choice for those seeking medical services in India.

Dr. Panigrahi is a seasoned healthcare professional who has a distinctive experience of 39 years out of which 12 years was as an educator and 27 years was in the corporate world where he worked with Indraprastha Apollo, Fortis and Max Healthcare. He firmly established Fortis on the accreditation map.

Fortis re-appoints Dr Bishnu Panigrahi as Group Head – Fortis was the first healthcare service provider in India, to do so. As part of the working group at International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), Dr Panigrahi and the team were responsible for conceptualizing the standard sets for Coronary Artery Disease outcome measurement. These standard sets were rolled out in November 2013 at Harvard Business School, Boston by Prof. Michael E. Porter. Dr Panigrahi has also fostered the Anti-Microbial Stewardship program since its inception and helped institutionalize a comprehensive Medical Audit system.

As a school boy in Odisha, Dr Panigrahi aspired to become a Foreign Service officer. However, a series of events and life-changing experiences inspired him to take up medicine as a profession. After graduating from S.C.B Medical College, Cuttack, Dr Panigrahi pursued post-graduation in Anesthesia from the reputed Delhi University. Subsequently, he went on to receive further training in Cardiac and Neuro Anesthesia from Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology. It was during 12 years of teaching at his alma mater in Cuttack that he got the opportunity to enhance his skills and work in Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Dunedin Hospital, OTAGO University in New Zealand. However, in spite of being offered a rewarding career in New Zealand, he decided to come back and serve his country.

How many times have people told you that you look fat? You don’t have a pretty face? You are too skinny? A bag o’bones? A barrel of fries? Or you should wear more makeup to look beautiful? If it had happened to you even once, then you were a victim of Body Shaming. Fortis Hospital had conducted a survey among 1244 women (between the ages of 15 to 65) across 20 cities (including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mohali, etc.) in order to gain an insight into the attitudes and perceptions of women towards the concept of body image, as well as the impact that body shaming has on their psychological well-being and at times leading to stress.

In the contemporary world, our perception of physical appearances tends to be significantly influenced by a multitude of factors, including the inevitable role played by the media, peer influences, as well as societal factors. Given such a context, it can be evidently understood how commonly many of us might experience a sense of dissatisfaction with our body image. And more so, it also creates a platform which encourages others to be able to judge or comment on a particular person’s body shape or size. Body shaming includes acts of sending provocative insults, and harassing others based on their inability to match up to the expectations related to stereotypical physical appearances, which can be in person, but is also becoming increasing prevalent through the internet.

Given the significant role of media influencing our perceptions of body image, be it the portrayals in films, television shows or other social media platforms, it is a common tendency for us to form comparisons which may not be realistic in nature, and as a consequence be unhappy with our body size or shape, or rather even feel dejected that we do not look like that particular model or actor/actress on the screen. In fact, such excessive comparisons based on the media portrayals can also create a sense of social pressure and competition to fulfil perceived demands and expectations of our physical appearance. Such social pressures can often be translated into a form of bullying known as body shaming.

We all deserve to feel good about ourselves. And in an attempt to reduce such prevalence of body shaming, there is a need to encourage media literacy, in an attempt to be equipped to recognize and assess the realistic quotient of whatever we are exposed to in the media. We all need to work towards creating a sensitized and aware society who is able to respect one’s own as well as others’ body image.

The Key Findings of the survey are:

90% women recognized that body shaming is a common behaviour.

Road Safety Week :11 to 17th Jan 2019: 821 road related accidents in India every day. Doctors at Fortis Hospital Noida came across a shocking case recently where a road accident victim had been so badly injured that his lungs had protruded out of his chest. The doctors were able to administer surgical intervention and save the patient, giving him a second chance at life. The patient, Mr. Yogendra Kumar, was travelling to work when a vehicle hit him. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital which refused to handle the critical case. He was then rushed to Fortis Hospital Noida where his treatment was handled by Dr. Vaibhav Mishra, Additional Director and Head, Department of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, and his team.

Mr. Yogendra was hit by a vehicle and flung 20 feet into the air. He landed on a tin sheet on the left side of his chest. This caused his chest to divide into two parts causing a large open exposing complete left defect which resulted in his left lung coming out. He also fractured multiple ribs on the same side and there was a large laceration on his left lung. Initially he was taken to a nearby hospital however they were unable to treat him effectively. He was presented to Fortis Hospital, Noida after 10 hours. By this time his condition was grave. His lung was exposed, he had lost lot of blood and there was huge defect in his chest wall and large tear in left the lung.

The hospital immediately took him for an emergency surgery, where his lung was repaired. His ribs were fixed and his entire chest wall was reconstructed in a 3 hour long surgery. It was a challenging surgery since there was extensive damage to the tissues which were mutilated and badly damaged. This made reconstruction extremely difficult and tedious. A special anaesthesia which used one lung ventilation was employed to repair the damaged lung. The surgery went well without any major complications and the patient got discharged from the Hospital on the seventh day after the surgery.

Dr. Vaibhav Mishra says, “Road traffic accidents and related trauma pose a unique challenge as damage to internal organs and external soft tissue is often huge. Tissues are crushed not just by direct impact but various acceleration, deceleration and pressure injuries, these also have potential for infection since injuries are usually contaminated. In this case we were lucky that despite all the delay we were able to save a life. All these injuries are avoidable and road accidents and related deaths can be averted by following the traffic rules, observing speed limits and avoiding drunken driving. ”

Mr. Hardeep Singh, Zonal Director says “Such cases are always very difficult. However if there is even a 0.1% chance of recovery, we do everything we can. For Road Safety Week we wanted to emphasise on how life threatening injuries are treatable yet best avoided by observing road safety. It is important to inculcate good road safety practices in the youth who are going to be the future license holders of tomorrow.”

According to the WHO, there are 821 road related accidents in India every day, i.e. 34 deaths per hour. One out of every nine deaths in India are accident related. Data from the government of India has shown a 3% decline in road accidents from 2016 to 2017. This is because the government and regulatory bodies have come into play creating better traffic rules, road safety policies and plans for infrastructural development and improvement.
