National campaign for rabies-free India by 2030 was launched at the 4th CII Life Sciences Conclave. As a part of the campaign to make India rabies-free by 2030, several activities for awareness and prevention of rabies will be undertaken at the national and state level under the aegis of the government of India.

New Delhi September 23: Cadila Pharmaceuticals, one of the largest privately held drug manufacturers in the country, and premier industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), at Delhi have launched a joint national campaign for a rabies-free India by 2030.

The campaign was launched at the 4th CII Life Sciences Conclave in New Delhi on Friday. Attended by top leaders from the pharma industry, senior government officials, and policymakers, the Conclave was organised to brainstorm on developing a well-planned inorganic growth strategy for the life sciences sector.

As a part of the campaign to make India rabies-free by 2030, several activities for awareness and prevention of rabies will be undertaken at the national and state level under the aegis of the government of India.Rabies claims around 59,000 deaths globally a year, of which around 20,000 or just over one-third of the deaths take place in India alone. Jawed Zia, CEO of Cadila Pharma, says “lack of public awareness and the resultant failure to complete the vaccine regimen are key causes behind rabies deaths.”

“The key issue is not the loss of lives, but the fact that almost all rabies deaths can be prevented through vaccination. The challenge is awareness and failure to complete the lengthy vaccine regimen, which involves multiple visits to the hospital over several weeks. At Cadila Pharmaceuticals, we have been focusing on preventing rabies deaths, and have recently launched ThRabis, the world’s first three-dose rabies vaccine. The Recombinant vaccine has a simpler regime as compared with other vaccines, and is proving to be a game-changer by helping save many lives,” Dr Manjul Joshipura, Senior VP, New Product Development & Innovations, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, said.

Dr. HK Gohil, Chief Medical Officer in Charge, ARV centre and Rabies Ward, I.D. Hospital and Dr. Jugal Kishore, Director and Head of Department of Community Medicine in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, also shared their perspectives and the way forward at the conclave.

They too noted that a large number of rabies deaths are because of a lack of public awareness about the disease and the resultant failure to undergo the full rabies vaccination regime. They expressed confidence that the campaign would go a long way in making India rabies-free by the end of the decade.

Belmore, the brand name of Bempedoic acid, is a novel drug for the treatment of high LDL-cholesterol. Ahmedabad-based Cadila Pharmaceuticals has launched a novel drug for the treatment of high LDL cholesterol for the first time in India.

To be sold under the brand name Belmore, Bempedoic acid is a one-of-its-kind drug for the treatment of high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol. High LDL cholesterol can lead to serious life-threatening heart complications due to blockage in blood vessels.

As per published data, more than 30 % of adults in urban areas and 20 % in rural areas in India are suffering from this silent disease. Statins are the group of drugs used to control LDL cholesterol but in more than 80 % of the patients, these drugs either do not give optimum control or are not tolerated.

“Belmore (bempedoic acid) provides additional benefits to patients, and all pre-launch studies have established this advantage. Belmore is one more addition to our fast-growing portfolio of indigenous innovations. We are committed to continuing our journey of making affordable drugs available to everyone,” says Jawad Zia, CEO ,Domestic Prescription Business, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Cadila Pharmaceuticals is one of the largest privately-held pharma companies in the country and has been engaged in the development and production of high-quality but affordable medicines for patients around the world. The launch of Belmore, which helps in lowering LDL-cholesterol level and lowers the risk of heart ailments, is another important milestone in the fight against cardiovascular diseases.

Cadila Pharma leads in digital transformation. The digital transformation has added a new dimension to the healthcare industry as till a while ago, digital was seen as the future, but the pandemic has made it a must in the present. Leaders from Cadila Pharma share their insights of the Journey and transformation.

Last year Cadila Pharma won the CLO award at TISS and Observenow award for innovative learning initiatives. Continuing its journey of expanding digitization initiatives in the last one year Cadila Pharma has taken massive leaps in up skilling a 2,000-strong field force via digital mediums.

Taking up skilling to the next level, and in what is likely to be a major milestone in its digital journey, drug major Cadila Pharmaceuticals has successfully trained its field force of more than 2,000 people via online sessions and video tutorials during the Covid-19 forced lockdown.

The new normal and digital transformation:

“Digital Transformation in pharmaceuticals is here to stay. Cadila Pharma embarked on this journey a year ago and had been making strides towards our efforts to enable our teams. We won the CLO award last year at Tata Institute of Social Sciences for one of our innovative learning initiatives. Digital transformation has always been a focus area for us and while we continue to work on innovations across marketing initiatives, employee engagement, and manufacturing innovations, upskilling of employees takes a precedence since they are the ones who will lead change both internally as well as externally,” shared Kulwinder Singh, Chief Communication Officer, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

Kulwinder Singh, Chief Communication Officer, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

When the nationwide lockdown was imposed, it limited the conventional marketing initiatives and interaction with customers, and gave rise to the challenge of strengthening the digital marketing efforts right to the last sales force team member for organisations all across. “There are multiple new opportunities coming up along with digitalisation. We decided to use the opportunity to upskill our employees with the aim to help them adapt to the digitalisation happening within the organization and also help drive employee engagement virtually, in the new normal in the times of Covid-19,” shares Biswajit Mitra, Chief Mentoring Officer, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

“Pharma industry has largely been dependent on traditional marketing activities, but in the new normal, ‘smart’ brands will be the most recalled brands. I am happy to share that our teams are future-ready to take up the new challenge of digital marketing, and we are further helping them with the right tools and content to engage the customers,” added Mr O.P. Singh, President, Sales and Marketing, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

Micro-learning initiatives:

Cadila Pharma, which is one of the largest Pharmaceutical companies in India, has worked on upskilling a team of 2,000+ over the period of a year through various micro and macro learning initiatives. “We conducted over 50 training sessions during the lockdown itself. These sessions which covered topics such as grooming etiquettes for video conferences, objection handling on phone, communication skills in digital detailing, advanced MS Excel for reporting, business planning in the new normal, digital marketing to drive engagement, sales forecasting for uncertainty, teambuilding while working from home, etc. We engaged more than 30 trainers and provided over 100 hours of training to our field force. Post this daily bite sized material was shared with the team so that they could learn at their own pace.” Kulwinder Singh said further.

Managing change:

Biswajit Mitra, Chief Mentoring Officer and Mr O.P. Singh, President, Sales and Marketing, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.

Moreover, once the trainings were complete, digital communication tools such as videos, webinars, video calls and emailers were used to connect with customers to ensure business connectivity as well as for engaging with healthcare providers. The pandemic and lockdown hit almost every one alike, but being prepared helped the company. The challenge was not as easy as it sounds since the pandemic required a more accelerated approach to change management. But the attitude and behaviour both at the end of the employees and at the end of the customers helped make the transition easier.

“As a forward looking organisation, we were always gearing up for digitalisation but COVID-19 has definitely accelerated the change. COVID-19 as a situation is unique and something no one can prepare for. This was not a gradual change, and to manage it, there was a need to implement the ‘Change Management’ methodology on a large scale while continuing to work remotely. Since we were already preparing for this change it meant that we had to just shift gears and ensure that everything was working like a well-oiled machine. It was important to ensure that employees did not feel that the change was forced upon them. This was required for maximum acceptance of change,” Biswajit Mitra added.

Scaling up innovation:

The digital transformation has brought about innovation and this is a chain reaction. It has led to multiple innovations at the organizational level within Cadila Pharma. Cadila pharma which was awarded the prestigious great place to work award last year, credits its employees for embracing this change whole heartedly.

“We are seeing a huge shift in the mind-set. The product marketing teams, the sales force, and even customers want to move to digital platform. Digital platforms have no boundaries and no physical barriers. Scaling up of knowledge exchange becomes easy. New ideas come up every day and people are equally enthusiastic to execute them. It is heartening to see this success and we want to accelerate the digital revolution within the organization. Our teams are exploring more avenues to connect with customers. We believe that this will be the game-changer, and will spur innovation across the board,” says O. P. Singh.

The innovation has added a new dimension to the healthcare industry as till a while ago, digital was seen as the future, but the pandemic has made it a must in the present. “We feel that innovation strengthens our organization. Our mission is to provide quality and affordable medicines to our patients, and we believe that we can move towards this goal faster and with more vigour with the aid of digital. It has opened newer opportunities for us. We see technology adoption further accelerating going ahead as it is adopted in all functions such as HR, Manufacturing, and R&D. This is helping us prepare for the future and be more adaptable,” added Kulwinder Singh.

It is a very common problem. As per a study in 2003 the number of osteoporosis patients in India were approximately 26 million. It is estimated that by 2050, half of the world’s fractures will occur in Asia.*

“Difficulty in use and early drop-outs is often cited as a common reason for non-compliance of osteoporosis medication. The medication is primarily used by people of 50 years and above. We realized that if the delivery system is complex, people stop using it. The ease of use of delivery device is as important as development of new drugs. The biosimilar NuPTH aims to be a cost effective solution for patients and will be sold as an easy to use, pre-filled disposable pen,” says Amit Ajmera, Vice President, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited.

“Cadila has always been committed to quality and affordable care. With the launch of NuPTH we intend to strengthen our orthocare portfolio and help increase choice, and access for osteoporosis care to patients in the Indian Market. NuPTH builds new bones with ease, and we want all patients to have access to it. Biosimilars market is a focus area for us and we will continue to strengthen our portfolio”, said Mr. O.P. Singh, President -Sales and Marketing, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited.

NuPTH is the third biosimilar announced by the organization in the past one month. The pharma giant has recently launched Rituximab and Bevasizumab biosimilars, recommended in multiple indications under the brand names Ritucad™ and Bevaro™ respectively.

The kits, containing essentials such as flour, rice, pulses, sugar, tea, spices, edible oil, vegetables, soap, etc., were distributed among families living in Dholka, Transad, Ingoli, Virdi, etc. Kits were also distributed among the needy in Bhat and Rampur villages to ensure their well-being. “We thank Cadila Pharmaceuticals for its support in this critical time. Cadila has always stood by us in order to reduce the suffering of people in the village and this help has been extended without us even asking for it,” said Yasinbhai, Sarpanch of Virdi village.

“For us philanthropy is a way of life. This value is actually a culture in the organization where even the employees contribute to help out the community. The essential kits was jointly funded by the employees enabling us to distribute more such items to the ones who needed it. We are also educating local communities about the importance of social distancing and hygiene in order to help them stay safe,” said Mr. B. V. Suresh, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Cadila Pharmaceuticals.
