Mumbai, March 5, 2021: The COVID-19 pandemic may have accelerated the shift towards digital healthcare practices in India, but its adoption among women in 2020 – especially in non-metro cities – has been significant. Registering an overall growth of more than 212% from the previous year, online consultations emerged as one of the preferred modes of consulting doctors by women in India.

More women in non-metro cities opted for online consultations in 2020 – growing at an average rate of 550%, compared with 400% recorded among women in metro cities. This means that even as the majority (65%) of thetotal number of online consultations done by women in 2020 were from metro cities, there has been a steady increase in the percentage of women from non-metro cities adopting telemedicine. In fact, this trend has been developing over the past three years.

From 10% in 2018 to 35% in 2020, women from non-metro cities are fast catching up with their counterparts in metro cities in embracing digital healthcare. What is even more remarkable is that around 75% of the women who consulted online from non-metro cities last year were first-time users of telemedicine.

“I discovered online consultation for the first time during the lockdown when I had to consult an ophthalmologist for an eye infection. The process was quick, convenient, and effective. Technology has indeed made things easier, especially for people our age, limited by options and mobility.” says Chandra, a 55-year-old Practo user from Salem, Tamil Nadu.

Increased focus on mental health and well-being

Together, mental health and diet and nutrition consultations contributed to 25% of all consultations done by women

Over 60% of all online consultations done by women for psychiatry were from non-metro users

Most discussed concerns of women in non-metro cities: depression, anxiety and panic attacks

Most discussed concerns of women in metro cities: stress, obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, and mood disorders

56% of all online consultations done by women for diet and nutrition were from non-metro users

Most discussed concerns of women in non-metro cities: weight loss, dietary supplements, healthy vegetarian diet, and empty calories

Most discussed concerns of women in metro cities: nutrition for kids, weight gain, eating disorders, and food addiction

Young women in their 20s and 30s formed the majority of online consultation users

Non-metro cities: Users in the age group of 31-40 years accounted for one-third (35%) of all online consultations done by women in non-metro cities, followed by those between 21-30 years (24%), 41-50 years (10%), and 51-60 years (9%). A significant portion (22%) of the queries came from women aged 60 and above

Metro cities: Users in the age group of 21-30 years contributed to 45% of overall online consultations done by women in the metro cities. It is followed by those between 31-40 years (25%), 41-50 years (7%), and 51-60 years (10%) and women aged 60 and above(13%)

Continued growth in online and offline consultations for both primary and secondary specialities

Primary and secondary care specialities like pediatrics, diabetes, cardiology, and oncology recorded a significant increase of more than 550% in both metros and non-metros in just one year

Under in-clinic appointments, top consulted specialities were gynaecology and dermatology, with visits to psychiatrists, dentists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, and neurologists also going up

Top cities (both among metros and non-metros) showed a growth of over 300% in the number of women consulting online

Top metro cities from where most of the consults from women came from include Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata

Top non-metro cities from where most of the women users consulted online include Lucknow, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur

50+ new non-metro cities recorded online consultations by first-time women users

Women from more than 50 non-metro cities, including Raipur, Howrah, Bharuch, Kibber, Badarpur, Alanganallur, Channapatna, and Kanpur, consulted doctors online for the first time in 2020

Commenting on these insights, Dr Alexander Kuruvilla, Chief Healthcare Strategy Officer, Practo, said, “Despite the headway made over the last few years to drive digital innovation in healthcare, 2020 accelerated that shift by at least five years. This has opened up access to digital healthcare services in India, revolutionizing the way it is experienced by women, especially those living in rural and remote corners of the country. With the support of 1 lakh+ doctor partners – including more than 50,000 female healthcare professionals – we hope to continue providing people the service they need, 24*7, to live longer, healthier lives.”

Dr Hema Jajoo, Obstetrician, Indore, who also consults on Practo, said,“With telemedicine, all health facilities are within women’s reach, especially for those living in non-metro cities. Online consultations provide equitable access to women who have the tendency to ignore their health concerns due to other responsibilities. With specialized doctors available to them anytime, anywhere, they feel empowered to be proactive about their health. With that, telemedicine has played a significant role in building and improving access to quality healthcare for all women in the country.”

Practo’s insights reports highlight important ailments and consultation-related trends in the country. The information is aggregated, anonymized, and analyzed at scale. We hope that with these findings, our healthcare providers are better equipped to understand disease patterns and address them effectively, helping others become more aware of their options when taking care of their medical needs.

Mumbai, November 10th, 2020: In a webinar that concluded today, Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation (NSF) organized the 10th edition of Tobacco Free Grants and Awards – 2020-22 felicitating NGOs and individual leaders from various parts of the country for their pioneering contribution towards tobacco control. The virtual event was attended by Dr Rana J Singh, Deputy Regional Director, South East Asia, International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease who was the Guest of Honor on the occasion. The event was also attended by Dr. Sadhana Tayde – Director of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra; Ms. Nandina Ramchandran – CEO, Salaam Mumbai Foundation and Dr. Monique Kamat – CEO, NarotamSekhsaria Foundation.

Speaking about the awards Dr. Monique Kamat – CEO, Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation said, “At Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation, our focus areas include promoting excellence among individuals, improving the quality of life for socially and economically disadvantaged communities, and promoting and protecting Indian traditions. Recognizing the health hazards of tobacco abuse, the foundation lays equal emphasis on cancer prevention. One of the key interventions is based on support towards tobacco control initiatives. Towards this, every year, we provide grants to organizations and individuals for their commendable work in the area of tobacco control and this year after a rigorous selection process we have recognized and felicitated 5 NGO’s and 10 individuals who have been dedicatedly working in the field of tobacco control.”

Dr.Rana J Singh, Deputy Regional Director, South East Asia, International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, commented, While I would congratulate the awardees and the grantees for their achievements, I would also like to appreciate the efforts taken by NSF and SMF for the initiatives undertaken by them in our fight for tobacco control. Tobacco continues to be a risk factor for COVID 19 and in the last 7 to 8 months, tobacco companies have been promoting their brands and products through CSR initiatives which involved youth intervention. In the last few months the Public Health Department of Maharashtra has worked on ban on sale of tobacco products which is a commendable effort, and learning from Maharashtra’s experience, it has led the way for other states to adopt the same. Global discussions are on in order to emphasize that this pandemic is an opportunity to support the tobacco consumers to stop usage of tobacco. Government and NTCP’s guidance is there and it is up to all of us as stakeholders on how we can work on this together and take it forward.”

Supported by the hygiene brand SAVLON, the programme which promotes healthy living with focus on wellness and preventive health through healthy habits, diet, exercise, and holistic health saw the speakers discuss at great length the importance of eating right, at the right time and getting enough exercise to aide metabolism. They also discussed at great length the high risk of obesity striking a large part of the population owing to current sedentary lifestyles enforced upon us due to COVID-19.

Shedding light on how diabetes is no longer a cosmetic issue but has seeped much deeper into our lives, Ms. Ritika Samaddar, RD, Regional Head, Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, “Obesity is the new disease that we need to fight. During this time, we have noticed the people who are obese, are the ones who are getting the severity of the COVID-19. The mortality rate is high only in these people. It is very important for us to understand that no longer can obesity be restricted to a cosmetic problem or something that has to do with your looks but to see it as a medical issue. The severity means they often end up in ventilators from which it is very difficult for them to recover, so it is high time we realise how important it is to be healthy. If you are healthy, your immunity is high so your incidence of any kind of infection would be much less. The public should consider obesity as a disease and take all precautions like dietary, lifestyle or medical management to control it.”

Equating healthy living to better immunity, she focused on the need to exercise regularly as unlocking of the country happens in phases. She added that people need to get back to physical activities like walking, jogging, cycling and running even if gyms continue to remain shut as this is going to be the new normal and will continue to be so for the next few months.

Ms. Ishi Khosla, Clinical Nutritionist, Centre For Dietary Counselling, added to the discussion by saying that obese people have 70% higher chances of contracting viral diseases and suffering from severe symptoms. She also elaborated on emerging lifestyle diseases that are being triggered by COVID-19 like insomnia, adverse eating habits caused due to ungainly work hours and excessive screen time.

Speaking on the importance of having magnesium in diet of people suffering from insomnia, Ms Khosla said, “People who are generally healthy are complaining of not being able to sleep. Anxiety and the fear of uncertainty is there for all. There are 2 slices to tackle it, one is diet and another lifestyle interferences. For diets, take food that digests easily. If digestion is good, body relaxes and emphasis other functions. To pacify nervous system, there are particular vitamins and minerals that are generally ignored. Magnesium is an under-diagnosed deficiency. As a supplement it can do a lot of good work for people with anxiety and sleep disorders. It can play numerous roles like diabetes, sleep management and cholesterol.”

Though, both specialists accepted that people should not recklessly opt for synthetic supplements except they get COVID-19 and are medically prescribed. For healthy people, they suggested opting for natural resources of supplements like herbs, vegetables and fruits. Ms Khosla further added that to battle obesity, focus should be laid on consumption of functional foods and increasing fermented food consumption. For non-vegetarians, she suggested balancing meat consumption with anti-inflammatory diet to keep the digestive and gut system healthy.

Sharing a few quick tips on breaking the sedentary nature of working at home, she emphasized the need to balance screen time and chair time, “No matter what we do, we need to keep moving so there should not be more than an hour of constant siting. This should be followed by 10-15 mins of walking or strolling. We need to take that break to get up and stretch. Sitting can lead to inflammation. Same goes for screen times. There has to be a pause button.”

Mr. Anil Rajput, Chairperson, ASSOCHAM CSR Council, reflected on the importance of balancing our lifestyle with the right food and exercise. “Lifestyle behaviour plays an extremely important role even if we discuss it without the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything in life depends on balance and consistency, therefore, the right balance of regular exercise, be it yoga, running or cycling, eating a nutritious diet, one that provides basic vitamins and minerals and having multivitamins along with mental relaxation can go a long way in warding off many diseases,” he said.

Ms. Manjusha Adlakha, Certified Yoga & Wellness Trainer & Art of Living Faculty moderated the event by placing a variety of issues pertaining to different age groups and lifestyle before the expert panelists and making the programme an extremely knowledge-gaining and insightful one.
