Ahmedabad: Can artificial intelligence and robotics make joint replacement surgery more precise and help patients regain mobility? These questions will take centre stage at IAACON 2026, the 22nd Annual Conference of the Indian Arthroplasty Association (IAA). Announced at EPIC Multispecialty Hospital, Ahmedabad, the conference will be held from October 23 to 25 at Club O7, bringing together over 1,000 registered delegates and 180 national and international faculty. The Theme of the Event is “Evolving Arthroplasty – Robotics, Kinematics and Innovation”.

“IAACON 2026 represents an important milestone for the Indian Arthroplasty Association, bringing together leading experts to advance the standards of arthroplasty practice in India. Our endeavour is to create a platform that combines contemporary knowledge with meaningful academic and surgical exchange,” said Dr. H.P. Bhalodia, Organising Chairman.

The conference will spotlight AI-assisted instruments, robotics and 3D camera-assisted surgery. Dr. H.P. Bhalodia will conduct a dedicated session on AI-assisted total hip replacement surgery using Intellijoint technology, highlighting the role of advanced surgical navigation in improving precision. The programme includes Unicondylar knee arthroplasty and total hip replacement demonstrations, approximately 30 surgical videos and expert panels discussing complex cases, rare periprosthetic fractures and challenging joint infections.

“With more than 1,000 delegates and 180 national and international faculty, IAACON 2026 is designed as a comprehensive academic forum with a strong focus on practical learning. The first large-scale cadaveric workshop in IAA’s history will further strengthen the hands-on dimension of the programme,” said Dr. Dhiraj Marothi Jain, Organising Secretary.

The IAA’s first large-scale cadaveric workshop, scheduled for October 22 at B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, will use 12 cadaveric specimens to demonstrate Direct Anterior Approach hip replacement, Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty, Total Knee Arthroplasty and Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty. Ten international faculty will participate: four from Australia, three from Ireland, two from the United States and one from the United Kingdom.

“IAACON 2026 provides a valuable platform for arthroplasty specialists to exchange experience, discuss evolving clinical practices and learn from diverse perspectives. Participation from experts across India and overseas will encourage meaningful academic dialogue and collaborative learning,” said Dr. Dimple Parekh, Organising Co-Chairman.

The IAA will present its consensus document, a practical reference intended to guide younger surgeons through established surgical approaches, support consistent decisions and improve patient outcomes. Senior specialists will discuss its recommendations for two hours. Each of the 25 scientific sessions will conclude with remarks by the most senior doctors, practical take-home messages and open questions from students and faculty. Five halls will simultaneously host workshops using anatomical bone models.

“The scientific programme focuses on contemporary challenges and evolving techniques in arthroplasty, covering robotic and non-robotic approaches, Relive and InBox surgical sessions and focused workshops to support practical understanding of complex surgical decision-making,” said Dr. Deepak Dave, Scientific Committee Chairman.

The conference will introduce the C.S. Ranawat Gold Medal Competition, with approximately 140 submissions and two papers to be selected. Dr. Parag Sancheti will deliver the inaugural C.S. Ranawat Memorial Lecture. Inaugural and valedictory ceremonies are also scheduled.

The demonstration marked the concluding public event of All Here’s Silent Mind Advanced Meditation Training, held at S-VYASA from 25 to 28 September.

Unlike traditional approaches to meditation, where progress and experience are largely understood through subjective measures such as concentration, awareness and perceived mental stillness, Quantified Meditation seeks to add a measurable layer to the practice by observing patterns of brain activity associated with attention, mind-wandering and mental silence.

During the Bengaluru demonstration, data captured from participants through EEG and BCI systems was translated into live visual representations, offering audiences a real-time view of measurable changes occurring during meditation.

“Meditation has been practised for thousands of years, and technology now gives us another way to study what happens during the practice. The Bengaluru demonstration is part of All Here’s wider effort to bring together meditation, neuroscience and technology to study attention and advanced states of consciousness.

The organisation’s work has taken it across meditation and research communities in Geneva, Tokyo and Kamakura in Japan, San Francisco and Los Angeles in the US, Thailand’s Buddhist Forest Tradition, and Tibetan monastic communities in India, Germany and France.

India has been a significant part of this journey. All Here and S-VYASA have collaborated since 2023 on meditation research and the study of advanced states of consciousness. The latest programme builds on this ongoing collaboration and brings the organisation’s quantified approach to meditation into a public demonstration setting in Bengaluru.

The Silent Mind Advanced Meditation Training, conducted from 25 to 28 September, brought participants together to explore meditation practice alongside the observation of brain activity. At the centre of the programme is Quantified Meditation. Using advanced neuroimaging technologies, including EEG and Brain-Computer Interfaces, All Here records, measures and visualises aspects of brain activity during meditation. The Silent Mind Meditation Residency, taking place from 25 to 28 September 2026, will combine advanced meditation practice with the science of meditation, metrics associated with meditation, and the science and technology developed by All Here to observe what happens in the brain during practice. What makes the programme distinctive is this combination of traditional meditation practice with Quantified Meditation, giving participants an opportunity to explore meditation both as an internal experience and through measurable aspects of brain activity.

Ahmedabad: On the occasion of World Myositis Day, the Rheumatology Association Gujarat, in association with the Myoin Society and supported by Antardhwani, organised a Patient Awareness & Support Programme in Ahmedabad at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College under the theme “Living Stronger with Myositis.” The programme brought together patients, caregivers, families and rheumatology experts to promote awareness, timely diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and long-term support for people living with myositis.

Myositis is a group of rare inflammatory muscle disorders that can cause progressive muscle weakness and may also affect the skin, lungs, joints and swallowing muscles. Symptoms such as difficulty climbing stairs, rising from a chair, lifting the arms or persistent fatigue can often be mistaken for ageing or lack of fitness, potentially delaying diagnosis.

Dr. Anuj Shukla, (Secretary, Rheumatology Association Gujarat), said, “Early symptoms of myositis can easily be overlooked. Timely evaluation by a rheumatologist is important for early diagnosis and appropriate management, while patient and caregiver awareness can provide much-needed support.”

Dr. Vishnu Sharma, (President, Rheumatology Association Gujarat), said, “Myositis can affect multiple organs, making coordinated care important. Greater awareness can help reduce diagnostic delays and support comprehensive treatment.”

The programme highlighted Gujarat-specific evidence on early specialist care. A six-year study (July 2016- July 2022) at Niruj Rheumatology Clinic, Ahmedabad, followed 40 patients with idiopathic inflammatory myositis for an average of 44 months. 32 patients (80%) achieved remission, while five died and three remained active. The study also linked delayed rheumatologist consultation beyond one year with chronic disease and greater disease-related damage.

Dr. Vineeta Shobha, (Rheumatologist), said, “Myositis can vary significantly between patients. Regular monitoring, appropriate treatment and attention to complications such as lung and swallowing involvement are essential for long-term care.”

The programme featured discussions on early warning signs, medicines, safe exercise, nutrition, fatigue and pain management, and lung and swallowing-related complications. A multidisciplinary expert interaction and open-house discussion also enabled patients and caregivers to engage directly with specialists and share experiences.

Dr. Ram Nath Misra, (Rheumatologist), said, “Patient education is an important part of myositis care. Understanding the condition, treatment and rehabilitation can help patients and families manage the journey with greater confidence.”

Globally, IIMs have an estimated prevalence of 2–25 cases per 100,000 people and incidence of 0.2–2 per 100,000 person-years, according to a 2023 Nature Reviews Rheumatology review. In India, studies of 250 IIM patients and 103 antibody-positive patients have documented dermatomyositis as the predominant subtype and distinct clinical patterns across antibody groups.

Through “Living Stronger with Myositis,” the Rheumatology Association Gujarat and Myoin Society reiterated the importance of early recognition, specialist care, rehabilitation and a strong patient-support network.

Delivering a special lecture, doctor, poet and writer Dr. Suresh Negalaguli called upon people to develop the habit of reading books written by doctors. “People should develop the habit of reading books written by doctors. The tradition of medical literature is not new. Many works have been published over the years to take health and medical knowledge to the public.”

He also cautioned people against relying on online searches for self-diagnosis. “Although obtaining health information online can be helpful, searching for symptoms on Google and attempting to self-diagnose is not the right approach.”

He stressed: “For health-related problems, it is essential to seek the advice of a qualified doctor.”

The participants expressed various dimensions of health, including health awareness, lifestyle, food, nutrition and healthy living, through stories and poems.

The competition was conducted in three categories—Doctors and Health Professionals, General Public, and Medical Students—in both the story and poetry sections.

In the Story category, the first prize in the Doctors and Health Professionals section was won by Dr. Naveen Ellangal. S. Raghunandan secured the first prize in the General Public category, while Dr. Bhavya L. won the first prize in the Medical Students category.
