Sathya Sai Grama, Karnataka: The Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR), the India’s first free private rural medical college under the One World One Family Mission, concluded the two-day International Endoscopic & Robotic Cardiac Surgery Conference (IERCSC 2026), bringing together leading cardiac surgeons, researchers and academicians from across the world to advance innovation in minimally invasive and robotic heart surgery.

Organised by SMSIMSR under the One World One Family Mission, in association with Manipal Hospitals and SS Innovations, the conference attracted renowned cardiac surgeons, medical professionals and students from India, the United States, Greece, Germany, Brazil, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Ukraine and several other countries. The event served as a global platform for exchanging knowledge, showcasing advanced surgical techniques and strengthening international collaboration in cardiac surgery.

A major highlight of the conference was the successful demonstration of live remote robotic cardiac surgery. Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder and Chairman of SS Innovations, remotely performed a complex robotic cardiac procedure from Delhi on a patient at SMSIMSR using the indigenous SSI Mantra robotic platform. Live surgical transmissions from Coimbatore and Greece also enabled delegates to interact with operating teams in real time. All the patients are recovering well.

The conference featured scientific sessions on the latest advances in endoscopic and robotic cardiac surgery, including robotic valve replacement, valve repair, coronary artery bypass surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Surgeons from leading hospitals and universities across the world exchanged experiences and discussed technologies that are reshaping the future of cardiac care.

The second day was devoted to hands-on surgical training, with more than 100 senior cardiac surgeons receiving practical training in endoscopic and robotic cardiac surgery using bovine and porcine heart models under the guidance of international experts. The programme provided participants with practical exposure to advanced surgical techniques that are currently available only at a limited number of centres globally. Another highlight of the conference was the panel discussion on “How India Can Become a Global Hub for Endoscopic and Robotic Cardiac Surgery Training.” Experts emphasised the need to strengthen specialised training, promote indigenous innovation and expand access to robotic surgery.

Organisers noted that comparable international training programmes typically cost between ₹18 lakh and ₹20 lakh, whereas the entire programme at SMSIMSR, under the One World One Family Mission, was offered completely free of charge. To strengthen long-term academic collaboration, SMSIMSR, Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata, and SS Innovations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to organise the conference once every two years and jointly promote education, research and training in endoscopic and robotic cardiac surgery.

Addressing the gathering, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, Founder of the One World One Family Mission and SMSIMSR said medical education should nurture compassionate doctors alongside skilled clinicians. “Ten years ago, this region had very limited infrastructure. Today, it has evolved into a global centre for medical education, research and rural healthcare. Through the One World One Family Mission, we remain committed to making world-class medical education and healthcare accessible to everyone, irrespective of their financial background,” he said.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. C. S. Hiremath, Organising Secretary, said the objective was to create an international academic platform where surgeons could learn directly from global experts while gaining practical exposure to advanced surgical technologies. Dr. Sudhir Srivastava said indigenous robotic technology has the potential to transform cardiac care by making advanced procedures more accessible and affordable.

Highlighting the impact of indigenous innovation, Dr. Nitin Rajput, one of the first surgeons to perform cardiac surgery using the Indian-developed SSI Mantra robotic system, said affordability would be the biggest driver of wider adoption. The conference concluded with a shared commitment among leading surgeons and institutions to expand global collaboration, strengthen surgical education and accelerate the adoption of endoscopic and robotic technologies. Organisers said the entire conference and advanced surgical training programme were offered free of charge by the One World One Family Mission, reaffirming its commitment to making world-class medical education and cutting-edge healthcare accessible to all.

Ahmedabad: More than 20%, or one in five Indian women, suffer from bone and joint pain of rheumatic nature, according to World Health Organization’s (WHO) Community Oriented Programme for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) and leading rheumatology experts.

The survey of prevalence and risk factors of arthritis was led by Dr. Arvind Chopra, Director and Chief Rheumatologist, Center for Rheumatic Diseases, Pune, and Ayush Distinguished Scientist Chair for Public Health and Epidemiology, Government of India. The findings, based on a pooled analysis of data from a survey of more than 56,500 people in 21 urban and rural sites, were published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases recently.

The findings based on simple extrapolation of study outcome data to the Indian population showed that 12.71 crore, or 65% of the 19.52 crore Indians suffering from arthritis pains, are women. The survey found that around 20-22% of women in India suffer from some kind of bone and joint pain of rheumatic nature.

More than 42.2 lakh Indias, of whom 35.1 lakh are women, suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, a potentially serious, crippling and extremely painful complex arthritis requiring special treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis is also a known cause of premature heart attacks and death. Around 11.7 lakh women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis were estimated to be young and in their reproductive age group, a number very high compared to other countries.

The survey findings were also presented and discussed during the two-day academic conclave organised in Ahmedabad by the Rheumatology Association Gujarat (RAG) and IIPH & Center for Rheumatic Diseases, Pune, on November 15 and 16. The conclave brought together leading experts, clinicians, researchers, and postgraduate students for learning, collaboration, and scientific exchange.

The two-day conclave has also announced the beginning of a new COPCORD survey, which will screen around 7,000 people in rural parts of Gujarat. The survey will focus on the incidence and prevalence of all kinds of rheumatic disease, not just arthritis. The data collection and publication will take around 6-8 months.

Sharing her insights, Dr. Reena Sharma, President of Rheumatology Association Gujarat, said, “Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders are among the most prevalent and burdensome conditions in India, but are neglected and under-reported. With crores of people in India, most of them women, living with arthritis-related pain, there is an urgent need for greater awareness, better integration between modern and traditional systems, and stronger clinical collaboration.”

According to the findings, 5.4 crore Indians live with osteoarthritis, commonly affecting the knees and spine. Osteoarthritis and lower back pain are the most common causes of disability. More than 1.72 crore people experience diffuse or localised musculoskeletal pain due to causes ranging from occupational strain, mental stress, age, poor lifestyle, and personal habits, including misuse of mobile phones. Manual labour, obesity, tobacco consumption, and low socio-economic status are among the other key risk factors. Moreover, arthritis pain was the number one self-reported illness amongst all recorded illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and stomach ailments.

Dr. Arvind Chopra, who has been conducting COPCORD surveys since 1996 and is the Chief Coordinator of India in global COPCORD studies, said, “Arthritic ailments are on the rise in India due to a variety of factors. It is not limited to urban areas but is also becoming a huge problem in rural areas. This conclave is an important step forward in understanding the burden and societal impact of arthritis in India, and in developing effective strategies for prevention and control of arthritis and related disorders by bringing together diverse disciplines.”

The conclave highlighted scientific sessions addressing critical frontline challenges such as Epidemiology and management of chikungunya fever and post-chikungunya arthritis, Common clinical dilemmas in patients with pre-existing autoimmune rheumatic disease, Burden of arthritis, Ayurvedic perspective on arthritis, and others.

Another highlight of the conference was the Scientific Writing Workshop, offering young clinicians and researchers’ practical insights into medical publishing.

The faculty and PG students from Medicine and Rheumatology, Community Medicine and Kayachikitsa (Ayurveda) from several medical institutions and colleges participated in the meeting.

Similar integrative meetings were organised in New Delhi, Pune, Gorakhpur, and Varanasi during August and October 2025 to discuss arthritis and increase awareness and knowledge in the community and medical faculty.

Ahmedabad: Cadila Pharmaceuticals, one of India’s most trusted and research-driven pharmaceutical companies, has launched Rosmi F, a fixed-dose combination of Rosuvastatin and Fenofibrate. This innovative therapy has been introduced to address the unmet clinical need in patients suffering from mixed dyslipidemia, a condition marked by elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels that significantly increase cardiovascular risk.

In view of the rising incidence of lifestyle-related disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, Rosmi F provides a comprehensive lipid management solution that targets multiple lipid parameters simultaneously.

Rosmi F brings together two powerful lipid-lowering agents with complementary mechanisms. Rosuvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase to reduce LDL cholesterol synthesis, while Fenofibrate activates PPAR-α receptors to lower triglycerides and increase HDL-C.

Speaking on the launch, Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman & Managing Director of Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited, said, “The introduction of Rosmi F is an important milestone in our efforts to address the growing burden of cardiometabolic disorders in India. Mixed dyslipidemia is a widespread yet often under-managed condition. Rosmi F offers clinicians an effective and scientifically validated tool to improve lipid control and reduce long-term cardiovascular risk. We look forward to its strong adoption and its impact on improving patient outcomes across the country.”

The scientifically proven synergy between rosuvastatin and fenofibrate helps improve lipid profiles more effectively. Together, they provide an integrated, guideline-aligned therapy designed to address elevated LDL-C, high triglycerides, and low HDL-C, common in metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and mixed dyslipidemia.

Evidence from global studies highlights the effectiveness of this combination. A 16-week study demonstrated a 53% reduction in triglycerides with fenofibrate, outperforming niacin extended release and without compromising insulin sensitivity. A 52-week open-label study showed patients achieving both LDL-C and HDL-C targets increasing from 19% at baseline to 50% at week 52 with rosuvastatin and fenofibrate therapy. These results align with leading guidelines, reinforcing the tablet’s clinical relevance and suitability.

The launch of Rosmi F further strengthens Cadila Pharmaceuticals’ leadership in the cardiometabolic therapy segment and reflects its commitment to delivering safe, innovative, and patient-centred healthcare solutions.

Ahmedabad: The Rheumatology Association Gujarat (RAG) is hosting a two-day academic conclave on November 15 and 16, bringing together leading experts, clinicians, researchers, and postgraduate students for an intensive weekend of learning, collaboration, and scientific exchange.

The conclave will feature two of India’s most distinguished figures in rheumatology, Dr. Arvind Chopra, Ayush Distinguished Scientist Chair and Director, Centre for Rheumatic Diseases, Pune, and Dr. Durga Prasanna Misra, Editor-in-Chief of Indian Journal of Rheumatology and Professor, Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology, SGPGI, Lucknow.

Sharing details about the event, Dr. Reena Sharma, President of the Rheumatology Association Gujarat, said, “Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders are among the most prevalent and burdensome conditions in India, but are neglected and under-reported. With over 19.5 crore Indians living with arthritis-related pain, there is an urgent need for greater awareness, better integration between modern and traditional systems, and stronger clinical collaboration. This meeting aims to address exactly that by uniting diverse disciplines on a common platform to advance understanding and improve patient outcomes.”

According to recent data published by Dr. Chopra and colleagues under the WHO’s Community Oriented Programme for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD), nearly 65% of arthritis sufferers in India are women, and one in five women in the country experiences bone and joint pain of a rheumatic nature. The team has completed 21 surveys covering more than 55,000 people, including 60% in rural areas.

The prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is estimated at 0.5 to 0.8%. An earlier survey found 42 lakh cases of RA, including 35.1 lakh women and 11.7 lakh in young, reproductive-age women, reflects the immense social and economic impact of these disorders.

Additionally, 5.4 crore Indians live with osteoarthritis, commonly affecting the knees and spine. Osteoarthritis and lower back pain are the most common causes of disability. More than 1.72 crore people experience diffuse or localised musculoskeletal pain linked to occupational strain, stress, or poor lifestyle habits.

“Women are more prone to rheumatic diseases, while obesity, age, manual labour, tobacco consumption, and low socio-economic status are the other key risk factors,” said *Dr. Chopra, who has been conducting COPCORD surveys since 1996 and is the Chief Coordinator of India in global COPCORD studies.

Against this backdrop, the two-day conference will explore epidemiology, clinical management, public health perspectives, and integrative approaches to arthritis and autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

The conference will also mark the beginning of a new COPCORD survey, which will screen around 7,000 people in rural parts of Gujarat. The survey will focus on the incidence and prevalence of all kinds of rheumatic disease, not just arthritis. The data collection and publication will take around 6-8 months.

On the first day of the conference, scientific sessions will address critical frontline challenges such as “Epidemiology and Management of Chikungunya Fever and Post-Chikungunya Arthritis”, “Clues to Clinch the Diagnosis of Vasculitis in Medical OPDs”, and “Common Clinical Dilemmas in Patients with Pre-existing Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease”.

The following day will see sessions focusing on “Burden of Arthritis: A COPCORD Data Perspective” by Dr. Arvind Chopra, and “Arthritis: An Ayurvedic Perspective,” followed by interactive sessions on “Function and Quality of Life” and a hands-on workshop on Quality of Life (QOL) assessment.

Another highlight of the conference will be the Scientific Writing Workshop, offering young clinicians and researchers practical insights into medical publishing. The sessions include “Beyond the p-value: Weaving Statistics into a Compelling Narrative,” “Anatomy of a Manuscript: A Deep Dive into the IMRaD Framework,” and “Thinking Like a Reviewer: A Live Manuscript Autopsy”.

The event aims to promote multidisciplinary collaboration between rheumatology, internal medicine, public health, and Ayurvedic systems, a model of integrative learning that aligns with India’s growing emphasis on evidence-based holistic medicine.

Dr. Reena Sharma added, “Our goal is to create a platform that empowers clinicians and researchers to combine scientific precision with compassionate patient care. By linking modern rheumatology with Ayurveda and public health, we can move closer to developing effective strategies for prevention and control of arthritis and related disorders.”

Arthritis and Autoimmune disease meet – The two-day meeting promises to be an important step forward in understanding the burden, spectrum, and societal impact of arthritis in India, and in strengthening the bridge between science, service, and society.

The faculty and postgraduate students from Medicine and Rheumatology, Community Medicine and Kayachikitsa (Ayurveda) from several medical institutions and colleges are participating in the meeting. Dr. Sapan Pandya, Vice-President Indian Rheumatology Association and Senior Rheumatologist in Ahmedabad, Dr. Deepak Saxena, Director of IIPH Ahmedabad, and Dr. Kiran Kale, Ayurveda Physician and Assistant Director of CCRAS, Ahmedabad, are coordinating the event.

New Delhi, 3rd November 2025: Motorica, a global MedTech company specializing in assistive technologies and medical cybernetics, has unveiled Omni Hand, world’s first bionic hand prosthesis equipped with optical myography (OMG) sensors. The launch marks a major leap forward in human–technology interaction and intuitive prosthetic control.

Moving beyond the limitations of traditional muscle-signal prosthetics, the Omni Hand leverages optical sensors to capture minute changes in tissue light transmittance caused by the movement of muscles and tendons. By interpreting these subtle variations in real time, the prosthesis translates even the smallest impulses into natural, precise motion. This breakthrough extends the benefits of advanced prosthetics to individuals with limited muscle activity, such as those recovering from electrical injuries, frostbite, or trauma, making intuitive and responsive control accessible to a wider spectrum of users.
“Omni Hand represents a new level of human-technology interaction. It doesn’t just respond to movement, it understands the user’s intent. This is a step toward truly natural control of bionic prosthetics,” said Andrei Davidiuk, CEO of Motorica.

The prosthesis is designed to recognize a set of the user’s “phantom gestures”, movements the brain imagines making with the missing hand, such as clenching a fist, making a pinch, or pointing. The Omni Hand can recognize and execute up to six individual gestures without the need to switch modes, ensuring fast, effortless, and adaptive control. Powered by an advanced user decision support system, the technology continuously learns from each interaction, adapting to the individual’s control patterns and improving precision over time, effectively enabling the prosthesis to evolve alongside the user.
While optical sensing in prosthetics has long remained within the realm of research, Cyber Motorica has become the first company to translate this breakthrough into real-world use. The successful pilot rollout, with the first eight users already integrating Omni Hand into their daily lives, marks a significant step forward in practical adoption and user experience. With mass production planned for 2026, the company is poised to make advanced, intuitive prosthetic control accessible to users on a global scale.

About the brand

Motorica is a top-10 global company in the upper limb prosthetics market. It develops and manufactures functional upper and lower limb prostheses for both adults and children from the age of 2. Since its founding in 2015, the company has produced over 9,000 prostheses for patients from 17 countries, including individuals from India, Vietnam, the MENA region, and Russia. In 2024, Motorica won the BRICS Solutions Award in the category of Biotechnology and National Health Care. The company specializes in rare types of injuries and offers the widest range of hand prostheses in the world. In 2025, Motorica opened its first office in New Delhi. In India, it already collaborates closely with over 25 clinics across key states, including Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, as well as in several other regions nationwide.

Motorica implements 3D printing using SLS laser sintering, metalworking, robotics, microelectronics, and other advanced technologies in its prostheses. The company offers prostheses with natural skin-tone finishes to make the limb look almost indistinguishable from the lost one. It also has its own design studio to manufacture prostheses according to individual designs.

Since 2021, Motorica has been conducting innovative research aimed at restoring sensory perception in amputees and reducing phantom pain. This technology involves stimulation of the peripheral nervous system through implanted electrodes in patients’ limbs. Currently, participants using the prototype of the new prostheses can distinguish between hard and soft objects, as well as determine their size.

In 2024, Motorica expanded into the leg prostheses market by launching carbon foot models in partnership with a leading company IB-ER (Turkey). This partnership is a response to the growing demand for foot prostheses in India and other markets.

Ahmedabad: Shalby Hospital Naroda has achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of its first kidney transplant, showcasing the hospital’s specialised healthcare capabilities.

The recipient, Kalpesh Patel, 37, had been battling chronic kidney disease for several years. Since 2022, his kidney function had been gradually deteriorating, and by January 2025, it had fallen to less than 10%. Despite undergoing dialysis thrice a week, his health continued to decline, and his heart function had dropped to 25%, making his condition critical.

Dr. Mahendra Mulani, Consultant Nephrologist at Shalby Hospital Naroda, counselled Patel about the possibility of a kidney transplant, the only definitive treatment option for his condition, after which Patel’s father volunteered to donate a kidney.

Both donor and recipient underwent a series of extensive evaluations conducted by the expert multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Mulani, Dr. Kosha Patel, Dr. Kirtipal Visana, and Dr. Darshit Shah to ensure medical fitness and compatibility for the transplant. The transplant surgery was performed at Shalby Hospital Naroda after receiving final approval from the government.

Patel’s recovery was swift and encouraging. His kidney function improved within days, creatinine levels returned to normal, and his overall health stabilised. His appetite and strength have returned, and he is expected to resume normal activities soon after completing his recovery period. The donor has also made a full recovery and remains in good health.

The donor has also made a full recovery and remains in good health.

Commenting on the surgery, Dr. Mulani said, “This successful kidney transplant marks a new beginning for Kalpesh Patel and his family. It also highlights Shalby Hospital Naroda’s expertise in advanced renal care. Organ transplantation can restore health and happiness and offers hope to the many patients on dialysis who dream of a better quality of life.”
