Bengaluru is now Sport Injury Capital of India

Bengaluru is now Sport Injury Capital of India: Bengaluru is fast turning out to be a ‘sport injury’ capital of India if one goes by the recent cases. Firstly, there is a dearth of playgrounds which is forcing kids and adults to play in narrow streets and end up injuring themselves. Secondly, the sleep pattern is also erratic and this is also resulting in a number of sport injuries and thirdly, the renewed interest in gymming and lack of proper training is also adding to the injury list. In a bid to address the issue, People Tree Hospitals had organised a first of its kind symposium-SPORTS CONNECT on Sunday that exclusively dealt with sport injuries and how to deal with it. Some of the top experts from across the country brainstormed on the issue and ways to tackle it. Inaugurating the symposium, People Tree Hospitals CEO and top orthopaedic surgeon Dr Chandrashekar Chikkamuniyappa said, “As participation in youth sports continues to rise, a direct impact on injury rates, medical expenses, family problem, and time away from sport is witnessed.”
Recalling a recent incident, Dr. Arun Kumar Rawal, Head (Orthopaedic and Sports Physiotherapy), People Tree Hospitals said, “Recently a football player, who’s a prominent member of his team was admitted to our Hospital with severe ankle sprain just a week before his international match in Brazil. Unfortunately, the injury prevented him from playing the game. The major cause of his injury was poor alignment of his foot and excessive tightness of the muscles. If he had undergone adequate fitness training, his flexibility and endurance of muscles during complex movements would have increased. The same would have prevented the injury and he would have performed better for his team and who knows they might have won the competition.”
There is an in-built threat of harm for athletes of all ages when take part in sport. With amplified youth contribution in sports, there is surge in sports-related injuries. Due to the speedy expansion of bones while growing and sluggishly stretching muscles, stiffness develops all over the growth plates, the apophyses, and the joints. This upsurge in tensile powers can place the above-mentioned structures at hazards of injury. Subject to the phase of physical development, children and adolescents often damage anatomic structures that are unlike from those damage in adults. Added to this, the impact of sleep deprivation will also directly impact on the injury rates among the young athletes.
This unique symposium for athletics and sports fraternity also aimed to unravel the extraordinary intricacies of mind, body, and soul, along with exhilarating sessions on diet and fitness. The team of experts brought in a holistic blend of knowledge, skills, applicability and mind-set and presented practices for one to stay fit, agile and excel in athletics and sports!
“This is an age of Sports, where the entire globe is in an Olympic fever. Currently, more than 25 per cent of the Indian youngsters are interested and enthusiastic about sports-be it at the street or the international level. Sport activities require complex movements with varying levels of intensity. Physical, nutritional, physiological and psychological fitness of the body are of paramount importance to anyone who wants pursuing sports and fitness. Most of the time due to unplanned or inadequate fitness training, the body becomes vulnerable to injuries. Practising sports or any physical activity without adequate information about fitness, its various components and strategies to prevent injuries can cause more harm than good. The lack of information about when to stop the activity and when not to neglect sports injuries to avoid serious damage is missing in many sports enthusiasts.  The range of the sports injuries can be as mild as an ankle sprain or as bad as a shoulder dislocation or a complete ligament tear which can permanently stop an individual from playing that particular sport. For sports Dr Rawal said adding that the best and the oldest treatment available for sports injuries is education about the injuries, their prevention and information on when not to neglect injuries. After that several non-invasive techniques such as Taping, casting, exercises and minimal invasive interventions such as Arthroscopic surgeries are available to rehabilitate the injuries and help the players to recover faster and return sooner to their sports with improved fitness and skills.
This Sports Connect Symposium was one of its kind and happening for the first time in Bengaluru. It was a multi-disciplinary educational program to the coaches, the trainers and the players on how to maximise their fitness and their performance levels. They symposium covered every aspect of sports such as injury prevention, acute care, rehabilitation at all levels, physical, psychological and nutritional leading to overall improvement in performance.
